I think the gays in this country paved the way for civil unions. Their marriages can be performed in any church that will do them.
It was brilliant, and it worked. All gays ever really wanted was to be recognized by the states to have the same rights as heterosexual unions. Health benefits, the right to work and have a same sex partner and not fear for their jobs when they mention they have a same sex partner, the right to buy a home together, the right to visit in the hospital and make choices that any other legally united couple can make without having to see an attorney first and pay for legal representation to get the same rights.
It was a brilliant move. Had the gays simply fought for civil unions...it would have been denounced by the straights. Now, by fighting for "marriage", they have gotten the homophobes and other people who don't believe in equal rights to give in to the demands they REALLY want.
Smart move...very smart. How do I know? I'm gay...and I'm loving it.
