Crime is a difficult problem to fight.
There are only a small percentage of people in this country (less than 2%) who are repeatedly criminally involved. The only real way you can deter these people from repeatedly offending is incarceration, and even then, they will often continue to offend in prison.
So, headless, are you suggesting that what the U.S. needs to do is build more prisons?
Because we have done so, and subsequently dropped our crime rate substantially (and I mean SUBSTANTIALLY). However, the left (worldwide), will then throw our incarceration rate in our face and accuse us of being a prison colony.
I mean, I'm all for building more prisons. So, by all means...we should do so.
But, generally, such plaintive bleats from the left mean that they are posturing for a softer position on crime. The only problem with this position is that there are very few soft programs out there with an evaluated track record of reducing offending.
In fact, in most regards, our criminal justice system in this country is quite effective. The vast majority of our juvenile offenders (over 90%) will only commit one offense and never offend again. Only about 2% of all juvenile offenders will end up being incarcerated as an adult.
