The reason we register for parties is that prior to the general election, there are primary elections for political positions ranging from mayors to senators and even the president. In order to vote in your party's primary, you must be registered to your party. I voted in the primary, for John Edwards. I have never voted for John Kerry, and never will.
OK i can almost understand having to register (don't why you couldn't just use the census) but why do you have to register your party? Couldn't i just register as a Republican and then vote Democrat anyway?
