Mugabe didn't still the holdings of white farmers because he was a racist: he stole them because he was an unprincipled leader determined to stay in power and in need of some goodies to hand out to influential people. In fact, everything Mugabe has done in the last decade or so has been a desperate scramble to hang onto the reins of power - and it has worked! The minor side effect of the complete destruction of the economy and of state services (HIV/AIDS programs have declined sharply in a nation with perhaps the highest percentage of infected people in the world, for example) is a small price to pay.
Right now, even his cronies are rueing their support of Mugabe, but no-one is willing to step forward and do anything about it (except to increase the size of their foreign bank accounts). Apparently everyone is waiting for a bolt of lightning to come down and strike Mugabe dead, but God doesn't work like that. Someone is going to have to remove Mugabe soon, or there won't be much of a Zimbabwe left to save. |

Ok if you don't believe his motivation was racist it doesn't really matter.
Fact is he initiated a stupid campaign to steal the land of the productive white farmer..many of whom have left the nation since..he replaced them with whomever..and whiomever couldn' produce. This caused the economy to got to hell and the lack of the ability to producce crosp for such simpyle things as bread. Without the whites Zimbabwe's economy became untenable..since many whites left and likely wil not come back for the forseeable future..Zimbabwe is going to be in a hole for a long time..regardless of whether Mugabe is in office or not..As long as he is in office those whites who left won't come back. Whites where th elinchpin of Zimbabwes economy and Mugabe for whatever reason you wish decided to pull it out.

Far more interesting is to ask why another country that was also late in achieving independence from the Western colonialists has managed to steer a seemingly different route. I refer here to Namibia. Sam Njoma was just as much a pariah to the whites as Mugabe. Yet Namibia is (I visited for 3 weeks last year) peaceful, sharing and amazingly free from litter and begging. Why? Botswana has been held up by liberal westerners as a shining beacon of how Africa should be. Rubbish!! It is a semi-desert with a small population and the offspring of Cecil Rhodes' commercial activities, De Beers diamond company, operates 2 fabulously rich kimberlite diamond deposits there. If it wasn't for this white ("apartheid") enterprise, Botswana would simply be a producer of sub-quality beef. Yet they are amongst the rudest most arrogant people in Africa. The great pity is that of all of the countries in the Southern African subcontinent, Zimbabwe is my favourite. Just a pity it has a demagogue who has to all intents and purposes been a fascist dictator for the past 20 years and has led this lovely country down the drain pipe. But Zim has no oil so we should not hold our breath waiting for regime change. Europe witheld from actions in the Balkans believing that the people themselves would institute change. Rubbish. And the same applies to those who hope for internal revolt in Zim. The racist elements amongst the Shonas won't allow it - plain and simple. Dont quote Kenya. The Kikuyu are not a majority. |
