Default Ivory Coast....

I am a little surprised that no one has posted anything about this.

From what I understand is the French are embroiled in a fight against the Gbagbo military.

The The latest crisis in Ivory Coast erupted Nov. 6, when Gbagbo's airforce bombed a French military post three days into a renewed government offensive in Ivory Coast's 2-year-old civil war. The strike killed nine French peacekeepers and an American aid worker.

France wiped out Gbagbo's newly built up airforce on the tarmac in retaliation. Gbagbo-allied Young Patriot youth militia led violent protests, burning French businesses and schools. Attackers raped several expatriates, France says.

I hear a quote from a high ranking French commander that was something to the effect of, "....they (Gbagbo military) aren't going to kill French soldiers and just get away with it."

Ummmm....seems the press really doesn't want something like this on the front page, too many similarities to the war in Iraq. Ironically the French government has asked the U.S. to aid in the evacuation of it's citizens from the area, to which the U.S., or course, fully complied.

Default I posted something on it last week...

I wonder why the UN hasn't issued a statement on this blatant empire-maintaining by the French.

Default Pardon me...

I didn't see the earlier post.

The U.N. did say that they in fact do not support the French's involvement in the situation on the Ivory Coast. Although the source of that statement escapes me at the moment.

Default Kofi Anan needs to go

I've also already posted about it.

But you're right. The UN is ignoring it. And for the most part, the liberal press is ignoring it. Although CNN did do a piece several days ago on tv about the "Hypocrisy of France." That's when I posted something here on it. Even CNN pointed out France's hypocrisy. Surprised the heck out of me!!

In a related area....why is no one condemning Kofi Anan for not sending in Humanitarian Aid workers to Iraq? After all, he is sending them into other dangerous areas. So, he can't use that as an excuse. There's only one reason he refuses to do so in Iraq: he wants it to fail and he doesn't want to do anything that is seen as being on the side of President Bush and the U.S. Anan needs to go. And it cannot wait until 2006 when he comes up for re-election again.

...Because French are there on an U.N. mandate (opens a PDF):

http://daccess-ods.un.org/access.nsf...g=E&Area=UNDOC

Quote:
16. Authorizes for a period of 12 months from 4 April 2004 the French forces
to use all necessary means in order to support UNOCI in accordance with the
agreement to be reached between UNOCI and the French authorities, and in
particular to:
– Contribute to the general security of the area of activity of the international
forces,
– Intervene at the request of UNOCI in support of its elements whose security
may be threatened,
– Intervene against belligerent actions, if the security conditions so require,
outside the areas directly controlled by UNOCI,
– Help to protect civilians, in the deployment areas of their units;
17. Requests France to continue to report to it periodically on all aspects of
its mandate in Côte d’Ivoire;

Default ...

The French were there for peacekeeping duties, and it has nothing to with 'empire maintaining'; the recent violence was due to attacks on the French by the Ivory Coast government - not the other way round.

The UN HQ, if you remember, got bombed last year, and he pulled nearly everyone out because it was too dangerous and the US couldn't provide protection; just like every other charitable organisation.

Default Ummmm... one Q...

Why are the French the only ones in there? Why can't the UN ask for some Royal Army/Marines, or US Army/Marines? Or even a PMC(PRivate Military Company)? The UN has used them in the past and they ended a civil war by destroying an enemy that was butchering the people. It may be empire maintaining, but would you rather have the rebels in power? The less people who die, the better, and if that means obliterating the Rebel forces, hell, do it! I'd rather see 1,000 combatants dead than 100 innocent noncombatants.
