Default Hopes rise for North Korea deal

Quote:
Delegates at the six-party North Korea talks have reached a tentative deal, the US nuclear negotiator has said.

A "final text" outlining initial steps for disarming North Korea was now being referred to each government for approval, Christopher Hill said.

His comments followed late-night meetings on what was meant to be the last day of the talks in Beijing.

If approved, a deal would be a significant step forward in a process stalled since September 2005.

The current round of talks - aimed at persuading Pyongyang to give up its nuclear programme - began on Thursday with a renewed sense of optimism from all sides.

But negotiations faltered over the amount of energy aid the North was demanding in exchange for disarming.

Reports suggest North Korea is seeking large-scale deliveries of heavy fuel oil in return for shutting down its Yongbyon nuclear reactor.

This is the 6 party talks the Democrats and far left types wanted Bush to scrap.

Probably fail in the end do to North Korea playing games BUT...yeah...this is a good sized bite of reality for the Bush basher types.

Default $300 million dollars worth of oil

I heard the US is promising a million tons of oil worth $300 million. This is basically the same agreement that former Carter came to during the Clinton Administration. Bush decided giving North Korea oil in exchange for closing down its nuclear program was crazy, so he stopped the program. But in the end, North Korea cheated on its end of the bargain as well, and quickly developed a nuclear bomb as soon as Bush stopped paying.

In other words, the old "oil for no nukes" agreement didn't work more than a decade ago and it won't work again. Diplomatic day-dreaming.

The North Koreans are very good at this little game.

The sad part is, we keep falling for it.

Default N. Korea Agrees to Nuclear Disarmament

N. Korea agrees to nuclear disarmament
By AUDRA ANG, Associated Press Writer

BEIJING - North Korea agreed Tuesday after arduous talks to shut down its main nuclear reactor and eventually dismantle its atomic weapons program, just four months after the communist state shocked the world by testing a nuclear bomb. But North Korean state media said the nuclear agreement requires only a "temporary suspension" of its nuclear facilities.

The deal marks the first concrete plan for disarmament in more than three years of six-nation negotiations. The plan also could potentially herald a new era of cooperation in the region with the North's longtime foes — the United States and Japan — also agreeing to discuss normalizing relations.

"Obviously we have a long way to go, but we're very pleased with this agreement," U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Christopher Hill told reporters. "It's a very solid step forward."

Since you seem to be happy about this, what is your response to this little nugget from the article?

"But already before its adoption, the deal drew strong criticism from John Bolton, former U.S. ambassador to the U.N., who urged President Bush to reject it.

"I am very disturbed by this deal," Bolton told CNN. "It sends exactly the wrong signal to would-be proliferators around the world: 'If we hold out long enough, wear down the State Department negotiators, eventually you get rewarded,' in this case with massive shipments of heavy fuel oil for doing only partially what needs to be done."

It sounds like the same deal Clinton worked out that the neocons call appeasement.

So, North Korea is going to go for a deal they got without having nukes, now that they have nukes? You need to grow up girl.

Default Make love not war sounds so absurd to me

Personally I think the deal stinks. I don't see why we offer them anything after they broke the deal Clinton made and, as a bonus, the deal doesn't address the 7 or so nukes they already have. Big deal. The only thing I like about the agreement is that it was done using the multi-lateral talks the US wanted and not giving into NK demands. Then we ruin it by completely dropping our shorts on the other end of the deal.

Default .

The "axis of evil" talk didn't work so now they're trying what was once called "appeasment" by the same neocons who are giving this deal the thumbs up.

Nuclear Blackmail - 1
Bush - 0

I thought Kim was the bad guy...so then why is it ok to promise a million tons of oil if he shuts down his nuclear program?

The most evident sign is that the accord, under which Pyongyang will immediately get 50 tons of emergency fuel oil with nearly a million more tons to come,
