Default China: on brink as No 1 Polluter

....and why the Kyoto Agreement was not signed by the U.S. and why it's a flawed agreement.

China on brink as No. 1 polluter

By Emma Graham-Harrison and Gerard Wynn
REUTERS NEWS AGENCY
March 24, 2007

China is on course to overtake the United States this year as the world's biggest carbon dioxide producer, according to estimates based on Chinese energy data.
The finding might pressure Beijing to take more action on climate change.
China's emissions rose by about 10 percent in 2005, a senior U.S. scientist estimated, while Beijing data shows fuel consumption rose more than 9 percent in 2006, suggesting China would easily outstrip the United States this year, long before a forecast.
Taking the top spot would put pressure on China to do more to slow emissions as part of world talks on extending the United Nations' Kyoto Protocol on global warming beyond 2012.
Thirty-five developed nations have agreed to cut emissions in accordance with Kyoto and they want others, especially the United States and China, to do more. China and India were not included in the pact because they are considered developing countries, which was one reason the United States did not sign it.
"It looks likely to me that China will pass the United States [in emissions] this year," said Gregg Marland, a senior staff scientist at the U.S. Carbon Dioxide Information Analysis Center, which supplies data to governments, researchers and nongovernmental organizations worldwide.
"There's a very high likelihood they'll pass them in 2007."

You're right, JP5, the U.S. being the number one co2 emitter in the world seems like a good reason not to sign the Kyoto Treaty.... oh, this is about china? Well, at least they're capitalist now, right?

No. The reason not to sign Kyoto is that it is a flawed treaty. Writing in exemptions for China and India, for example. In other words----"yes, we'll hurt the U.S. economy, but prefer not to hurt anyone else's."

Default Hmmmm..

China = 1.3 Billion people

USA = .3 Billion people

So their extra Billion people finally have generated enough CO2 to equal our output... what is the big deal.

And the problem is not the Kyoto treaty.. That is just your excuse for doing nothing about global warming, to claim the treaty is flawed.

Then why doesn't this administration push for a better treaty. Why doesn't the USA make it's own proposals. Hell, why doesn't this administration just put back the pollution controls they dismembered from the clean air act.

http://www.cnn.com/2004/TECH/science...churches.bush/

Oh that's right, why even argue that the treaty is flawed. There isn't is problem to be fixed in the first place.

Default The Solution to Pollution

Like one of my favorite authors once said, we MUST pollute. It is a necessity. If we don't, no one will try to find a solution. And that's one sad guy who's missing out on a Noble Peace Prize. Why put someone down like that?

Default How about

good old nuclear energy. Don't give me silly excuses like 3 Mile Island and Chernobyl. Nuclear power stations have come a long way. Good chunks of Europe are delighted with nuclear energy. It's clean and relatively cheap. The US hasn't invested in nuclear energy since the early 70s. Could it possibly be the petroleum/carbon based energy lobbies ?! Never

In a twisted way that makes sense. Humans solve problems whether we create them or nature does. We should look at every new problem as a challenge to drive us to action. We will be better off discovering new technology with less pollution than had we never developed the polluting technology.

Default To say Kyoto is flawed is putting it kindly

a better description would be is it's completely useless.
