Default A reality check between Taiwan and PRC

To all, thank you for reading this topic. I noticed many bloggers are unclear about Taiwan’s stand on Taiwan-PRC situation, so I have tried to compose a coherent article to clarify some of these people’s questions.

As a Taiwanese, I would like to clarify how we were taught when we grew up. First, we were taught that PRC is not a sovereign government but rather it is a group of mobsters who stole the main land from us; and Taiwan was never a part of China but rather that CHINA IS PART OF TAIWAN. And one day, we will liberate our fellow countrymen from the oppression of communism, by force if needed. It has been discovered recently that during the 1960s, the Taiwanese government was plan to nuke PRC as an attempt to the process of "re-liberation of the mainland." However, this was stopped by the US interference.

In regard to some of the Chinese bloggers’ comments that people who currently live in Taiwan are definitely Chinese, I thank you all for your willingness to accept us but I must apologize to you first, because the truth I am about to reveal will definitely offend you.

Most people in Taiwan today don't categorize themselves as Chinese, but rather they prefer to be addressed as Taiwanese. They considered that being grouped as Chinese brought shame to them, for reasons well-known internationally: ill-manner, rudeness, dishonest, and etc. Please do not take these comments personally, I believe there is probably (perhaps) some Chinese who do not deserve these titles. Furthermore, recent studies have also revealed that genetically, Taiwanese share more resemblance with Vietnamese and other residents on South East Asia islands than with the mainlanders. This leads to the speculation that perhaps Taiwanese may not have such a strong tie to the Chinese origin as once expected. Moreover, the ideologies and beliefs shared by Taiwanese and Chinese are almost completely different. For starters, Taiwan believe in capitalism (which definitely has helped it achieved the economic prosperity it has today) while PRC believe in communism (I would not comment on the future; but I am confident to say that in the past 5 decades, economy and living standard are disastrous in China). Next, the Japanese influence on current Taiwanese, which has taken place during the colonization period, has reinforced the ideas of pursuing for perfection, honesty, responsibility, reflection on oneself, and etc. into popular Taiwanese beliefs. On the other hand, the PRC has Cultural Revolution, which basically remove the idea of trust from people (for instance, they have a rather “interesting” (absurd) way of interpreting parent-children relationship. For people who are interested in it, please research it on the internet by yourselves. It is something too twisted for me to even type them out). The truth is that most Taiwanese today have a more positive attitude toward Japan than PRC due to all the reasons stated above, and of course, the recent threatening gestures acted by the PRC also helped. Taiwanese lost faith (assuming there was any to begin with) in PRC, and now the popular comment of the Taiwanese toward PRC is: "A rabid dog will always want to bite!"

Currently, most Taiwanese seek for a peaceful solution toward independence; they fear that a war may destroy Taiwan's prosperity but while at the same time they don't want to retain any ties with PRC. You may called these people "cowards" if you like, but I assure you that these "cowards" will rise up and fight against PRC invasion if a PRC rocket shattered the windows of their homes. I think the current situations between Taiwan and PRC is similar to the situation between Britain and USA; in both cases that the people of the two countries share the origin but different ideology and hence the separation. Today, no one addresses an American as a British and the current situations between Taiwanese and Chinese seemed to follow this trend, too.

I realized there are people liked to make the analogy of US’s failures in Vietnam War and current Iraqi war with the possible Taiwanese war; these people believed US is doom to fail in all these events. Clearly, these people do not understand the sentimentality of the Taiwanese: all Taiwanese are willing to die in defending for their love ones, homes, and country. Unlike the situations in Vietnam, where a country has two popular ideologies (communism and capitalism), the majority of the Taiwanese are all believers of capitalism. Furthermore, the current Iraq circumstances are also not applicable to Taiwan, where most of the people view USA as an ally instead of an invader. Thus, I personally do not foresee the possibility of PRC winning the war against Taiwan. Because in addition to PRC’s state-of-the-art military equipments that are currently inferior to Taiwan’s military, there are also other problems troubling PRC, such as possible military uprising in Tibet, border disputes with Vietnam, India, and Russia, and of course, the riots (or rebellions) that may occur during the war, particularly in the South China. In addition, the PRC army does not have the will as the Taiwanese army in fighting for their country. It has been speculated that PRC need to devote at least 2 of the 3 navy fleets to take over Taiwan. The question now is who are willing to take the job? What will these fleets benefit from the war? For people who don’t understand how communist government function, you can be sure for one thing, they do not work the same say as we do. Constant internal struggle for power is part of life in communist world; therefore if one is weaken by something, say war, it is for sure that he/she will be replaced by “his/her own followers”. The fact that this is true makes the leading men of the PRC very reluctant to declare war with Taiwan. Nevertheless, we should always be prepared to guard ourselves against the rabid dog.

Currently, Taiwan is a de facto independent country and it will continue seeking for full independence. Currently, I believe America cannot afford to let Taiwan reunite with PRC; can anyone image a belligerent war ship cruising around Hawaii or West Coast and claiming that it is in the international water? America has never subdued itself to such a threat since WWII and I doubt that it is anxiously seeking for it. I thank all the people currently supporting Taiwan and humbly ask for your continue support for democracy.

I hope my input in this blog can clarify some of things that confused many bloggers of this forum and thank you for all your concerns about Taiwan. To all the bloggers who advocated the idea of reunification between Taiwan and China, I thank you for your concerns about Taiwan; however, I would strongly suggest you to check on the facts before making any assertive statements, because you are providing false information to the people who want to seek for the “truth.” I understand that “false-leading” may be the job that PRC assigned to some of you since these type of political websites are mostly banned from the PRC citizens (unless you work for the governments or access to it illegally). Still, I urge you for your sense of decency and stop spreading rumors around. Thank You.

Default Go with the spirit of indepence, but not any governments

I am from the mainland, and I'll support your independence if you're willing to sacrifice everything for it. "Give me liberty, or give me death." Yes, that's it, no one wants to be a slave of others. You got to fight for your freedom. You got to be a freedom fighter first to deserve the freedom. You may hope for Uncle Sam's salvation, but don't count on it. In reality, Uncle Sam has always been on the side of the slave owners and the side of the powerful. Taiwanese people are humans, not any body's pawn. Chinese are humans, they are not gun fodder.

As a reality check, Taiwan has been representing China (include the mainland) in UN until 1971. And Taiwan government had been claiming mainland as part of ROC until last year (if I remember correctly). In Taiwan, you have official governing bodies for every provinces in mainland. So you might ask, what the hell is all that about?

The history is that Taiwan had recently separated from the mainland as a fallout of a civil war. The governments on each side had maintained that they were the masters of China. Then who decides? Simply by force. CCP had the support of the people in the civil war, this was how they conquered the mainland with a peasant army and beat the Nationalist Party with America support all the way to Taiwan. In the following years, the Taiwan government made a lot of attempts to fight back. In this period, bombing of mainland, economic blockade and all other forms of sabotage was carried out with the alliance of America. As a result, mainland was isolated and its construction severely crippled thank to the Taiwan government.

The rapprochement between US and the Mainland started a new era that opened up the possibility for the mainland to join the international market. The Taiwanese government's influence gradually declined. Now the dream of recapture of the lost fortune becomes unrealizable. Worse than that, the new upstarts in Taiwan find their territory is under real threat from the new Chinese big boss who just transformed themselves from old communist party
echelons. That's why you see a variety of reaction from Taiwanese politicians. They rant about Chinese bully and they forgot what their government did in the past. They call their opponents traitors, yet they reap huge profits from the mainland and they fraternize with CCP. I don't mind your calling Taiwan a democratic country. Just don't fool yourself into believing that you really elected some leaders who cared about Taiwan.
As they will sell Taiwan in no time when it's opportune and the price is just.

Another reality check is that, you should thank current CCP leadership since they are the ones who'd do everything to avoid a war with Taiwan. All they need is that the Taiwan government does not declare independence formally. so that the CCP can keep fooling the mainland people that they are the patriots. Had CCP been overthrown by other right extremists (or maybe "left"), Taiwan will be in a state of living hell ten years ago. That's of course not beautiful for ordinary Chinese either.

As for me, give you independence or give you rockets, it's none of my business. If there's a dog-bite-dog war, at least, I don't have to be involved.
