Default Bibles Banned at 2008 Beijing Olympics

Bibles Banned at 2008 Beijing Olympics

Quote:
Organizers for the 2008 Olympics in China have released their list of items banned from the Olympic village where the athletes will stay.

Among the "prohibited objects" -- Bibles.

The Catholic News Agency reports that the committee behind the Beijing games cited "security reasons" for the ban.

Athletes are also prohibited from bearing any kind of religious symbol at Olympic facilities.
what a bold move. This on top of all the other crap the Chinese are pulling. We should push for accommodations and other positive changes from their government. If the response is apathetic, we should at least make public threats about not attending the ’08 Olympics.

Default I like Kit-Kat, unless I'm with four or more people.

Thankfully, it appears to be an unfounded rumor.

I like two snippets out of your sources, tho :

Canadian Press:
Quote:
Beijing continues to repress Christians, Tibetan Buddhists, Muslim Uighurs and the Falun Gong, the report said. More than 100 foreign missionaries have reportedly been expelled in what critics say is an effort to "tighten control on Christian house churches prior to the 2008 Olympics," the report said.
Xinhuanet:
Quote:
China has always respected and protected the religious freedom of foreigners living in China in line with laws and regulations, he said.

It would seem odd considering you can get Bibles in China.

Default I remixed a remix, it was back to normal.

Here's an uplifting story from a missionary once held in a Chinese prison.

Default ,,

The Chinese are skeptical of "all" religion.

They've been conquered by "everyone", the Muslims, the Christians, .....

Even their own internal "religion", is kinds of a "non-religion", 'cause Buddhism doesn't (usually) involve any "belief in God" - and most of the traditional Chinese values, come out of Confucianism.

They just don't want people using the "excuse" of the Olympics to foment religious unrest.

And their definition of that would of course be any religion that exists that is not under the control of the government.

Yeah, you can get Bibles in China, you can read Bibles in China, but waving them around is a very bad idea. Proselytizing is against the law. If you go to China on a mission you better be very careful. Or better yet, don't go to China on a mission.

Recently talked with someone who has a kid teaching English in China. They send emails but have to talk in code. An example phrase from an email would be - "went swimming with two of our new friends today" (baptism).
