Default China sets Tibet protest deadline

Quote:
The authorities in Tibet have given anti-Chinese demonstrators until Monday to surrender, following violence that officials say left 10 people dead.
"The plot of the separatists will fail," the head of Tibet's government warned as security forces patrolled the main city, Lhasa.

State media said the 10 killed in Friday's clashes had included business people who were "burnt to death".

But exiled Tibetan leaders put the death toll higher and blamed China.

"There have been 30 confirmed deaths until today, and over 100 unconfirmed deaths," the Tibetan government in exile, which is based in northern India, said.

The violence - the worst in Tibet since 1989 - erupted on the fifth day of largely peaceful protests that began on Monday's anniversary of a 1959 uprising against Chinese rule.

Fires broke out near the Jokhang temple, one of the most sacred sites for Tibetan Buddhists, and Xinhua reported that shops, banks and hotels were destroyed.

News out of Tibet is obviously hard to get. I wouldn't doubt things are much worse.
The Chinese Communist Party doesn't have much qualms in shooting people and sure as hell doesn't care about doing it to Tibetans.

Keep in mind "surrender" would mean they get to go to a Concentration camp and probably die from the effects of forced labor/starvation/or simple intentional mistreatment(torture). IOW Its not really a good choice.

So why are we trading with these people? Their economy would collapse if the democracies of the world ignored them- especially a decade ago.

It'll be interesting to see how this goes down. With the Olympics and the world watching I have feeling China's response will be different. It's not going to be a happy ending for the demonstrators no matter what though.

You can't ignore almost one fifth of mankind. You would hurt the people and create extremism like that. China is much better now than 30 or 40 years ago in terms of human rights.

With China? If we leave the Chinese market they find another, more pliable one. And we don't want China exerting economic power over other nations.
