Craig Emerson may be the new song and dance MP of the federal Labor government but a Peter Garrett he is not.

Dr Emerson was trending on social media site Twitter on Monday after he broke into song on the carbon tax to the tune of 1975 hit single, Horror Movie.

The trade minister began boogieing to the backing of the Skyhooks number at a doorstop press conference in Canberra before singing 'no Whyalla wipeout, there on my TV'.

Comments on the micbroblogging site range from 'what an idiot', 'Someone should tell Craig Emerson The Voice is over', 'Seriously, what was Craig Emerson thinking!?' to 'I thought it was one of the funniest things I've seen in ages!'

Dr Emerson's reference to Whyalla follows 2011 comments from Opposition Leader Tony Abbott that the introduction of the government's price on carbon emissions from Sunday would turn the South Australian industrial city into a ghost town.

Mr Garrett, the school education minister, was lead singer of one of Australia's greatest rock bands, Midnight Oil, before he entered federal politics in 2004.

Mr Garrett later tweeted: "I think @CraigEmersonMP does a terrific job ... as a Trade Minister."

Another sickening embarrassment for the ALP / Unions / Greens / Dependant Independants. I can`t imagine what posessed Emerson to pull this stunt on the second day of the carbon tax, but whatever it was, it wasn`t inteligence. Australia needs people of above room temperature IQ to govern the place. I hope they can find a nice nursing home for Craig Emerson.

Yeah. I would imagine Emerson would like to go back in time and do it differently. Should we expect more from our politicians ?

Lets hope one day soon the people wake-up and realise they should be getting and expecting more from these idiot politicians, but don't hold your breath.

In such a short period of time we have seen MPs progressively destroy any credibility politicians once had. From appearing on reality shows to singing in the streets, is this what a repectable polly should be doing? No, dreaming up ways, to be noticed by the community, is not good for managing any government. However, Both parties seem to be guilty of this and would appear oblivious to the fact it makes them more of a joke, than a decient political advocate to enhance the Australian way of life.

I can find only two possible motivations for Craig Emerson acting as he did.

1. Craig Emerson is a retard.
2. Craig Emerson was attempting to appeal to retards.

My best mate has a mentally challenged young daughter. When she saw Emerson on TV, she laughed uncontrollably, and went up to touch the telly. Belinda, his wife, has actually recorded the clip especially for Emma.

So one thing is for sure Aussie, Emerson did appeal to one group of people with a severe mental disability…
