Thread: Can`t Buy Her Love

  1. Default Can`t Buy Her Love

Last week critics of Julia Gillard said that if voter polls did not lift she should step aside as prime minister.

The latest Newspoll in The Australian on Tuesday shows that things have just got worse - Labor has dropped below 30 per cent for the first time in three months.

Only 28 per cent, two percentage points off its record low, of voters would tick the Labor box, compared with 31 per cent in early July. Meanwhile the coalition vote slipped two points to 46 per cent.

But at the same time, voter satisfaction with Opposition Leader Tony Abbott is at its worst level on record - 30 per cent - despite the coalition maintaining a commanding lead of 56 per cent to 44 per cent on two party-preferred terms.

There is a silver lining for Mr Abbott: he has extended his lead over Ms Gillard as preferred prime minister to four points - 40 per cent to 36 per cent.

The poll shows that Australians can't be made to change their views despite the continuing shower of cash handouts from the government to middle Australia.

Last week, government whip Joel Fitzgibbon, a Kevin Rudd supporter, told ABC television that if leaders stay unpopular for long enough "they'll inevitably stop leading the party".

The Australian says that while Ms Gillard retains strong caucus support, her critics argue that if polls do not improve over coming months, she should be asked to stand aside.

It lookes like the bribery isn`t working any more, hasn`t for quite some time. My theory is, for every voter who could be swayed by a cash handout, there are more who are repulsed by this tactic.

A change sounds inevitable based on the polls. The pressure wouldn't be so bad if there was a moderate opposition leader you would think. What is disturbing is that nobody really knows what Abbott's stance really is on anything and with ultimate power in his hands it would be a bit concerning. We are a hard mob to please! Maybe the poms are right, we've now taken the title of being the worlds worst whingers!

The worst thing Gillard could have done was to seek more exposure (through live blogs and google) because no-one
wants to look at her or listen to her stupid voice...people are sick of discussions about the carbon tax and sick
of the sound of her and sight of her in her dowdy clothing and her boring red hair and red jackets....at least Bob Hawke
    had a personality...and Sonia McMahon....welllllllllllll.... ..!!!!

You're probably right, Howard lasted for so long partly attributed to his mostly concise responses and minimal exposure. Rudd over-exposed himself. You tended to get tired of his bland and lengthy media responses and hunger for attention. Gillard needs to chill and stop trying to over justify decisions IMO anyway!

Abbott`s biggest problem in one sense, is the ultra poor quality of the ALP Govt. To a large degree, opposition is limited to reacting to the actions and propositions of the government of the day. While Abbott has had a ridiculously easy job as opposition to this Fed Govt., the flip side, is that this unchallenging position hasn`t given Abbott much opportunity to display the leadership qualities that voters need to see.

This is a pretty confusing statement Aussie. It's seems contradictory to actual facts. Anyway......

Its too late now the damage is done the carbon tax is in and in within few years everything is going to be so much more expensive further reducing our standard of living.

Ju-LIAR GIllard, Bob BRown, Christine Milne, Wayne Swan and Penny Wong will be remembered fro a long time to come for all the wrong reasons.

I hope they get pelted with eggs and tomatoes everywhere they go.
There has never been a more serious assault on our standard of living than the carbon tax. dumbanddumber

"The cost, paid by big polluters, will be passed through to the prices of the goods you buy." Julia Gillard

"Australian households will ultimately bear the full cost of the carbon price." Ross Garnaut

"A carbon tax does not guarantee emissions reductions" Former Labor Climate Change Minister Penny Wong

It is confusing. I should have spent more time on it. In short, I was trying to say that Abbott has had a free ride as leader of the conservatives. I don`t recall an opposition leader ever having such an easy time as Abbott has had since he took over the leadership of the Libs. Although Abbott has been in politics for many years, his leadership qualities haven`t been tested at all.

Got it. Yeah, you are right, but his constant negativity doesn't go down well with the voters. He just doesn't seem to have noble characteristics.
