Ideally - it would be nice if our Head of State wasn't some half-witted in-bred from the other side of the world. Practically - it makes very little difference.

I would be happy to see mention of the Crown removed from the Constitution - and the Governor-General be re-named as President, or Grand Poohbah, or Warnie or whatever you want - but I do see it as a matter of very little importance.

Icon14 Long live the Republic of Australia!

Monarchy is costly and useless. Australia should become a Republic, no doubt in my mind. At least you have a public debate on the question in Australia. For some reason canadians seem to love being governed by a foreigner since the matter was never seriously talked at the federal level and in english-speaking provinces. Quebec, on the other hand, is very anti-monarchist. No doubt we will get rid of it someday, with or without Canada.

Yes, the Queen is from the other side of the world but she's hardly half-witted.

Doesn't mean she should be making decisions about our country, though.

I was thinking more of her son I suppose.

And her husband.

But the Queen makes no decisions about our country. She plays no role in it's government. That is why the question really isn't very important

Lol! I agree with you on the husband one.

I thought that some big decisions had to be `ok'd' by her - not necessarily decided by her. That's still too much, though.

No. The Queen has no role in Government. The G-G fulfills her constitutional duties. And all other constitutional powers such as the power to choose the G-G or to declare war etc. has been passed onto the Prime Minister.

The Crown does apparently still have power constitutionally to disallow a bill passed by Parliament within one year of that bill being given assent by the G-G. This power has never been exercised - and if it were attempted, I think a referendum would remove that power very quickly.

No we should not reach for our ultimate independence and become a republic.

We Australians are just NOT worthy enough to be independent.

We must hide under the skirt of the English Monarch who is such a hard worker.

We cant do anything at all on our own.

We must continue bending over to Buckingham Palace and sending as much Royalties as we can to the Royal Family - who obviously need it urgently

W cannot possibly stand up on our two legs. We are just NOT good enough - We are totally and utterly hopeless

My suggestion is for Australia to remain a subserviant MONARCHY for the next 1000 years at least. Maybe we could have a referendum on the issue in the year 3008 - we should be confident ad intelligent enough to decide then.

Yes, we should become a Republic. I have no idea why the Queen is our Head of State, when was the last time she flew over here?
