Why?

The one thing I really don't want is for a Republic to be installed that involves an elected President. That would be a disaster.

We already have enough polititians. We don't need one more clown sticking his nose in thinking he has a mandate to do stuff.

I like the cultural monarchy... but I think the Aussies should become more culturally independent and become a Republic.

Ha - great voter turn-out. I love it.

There's been ongoing debate for years and years and years about our flag. The only day it will ever change is if we ever get rid of the monarchy. Until then, we're stuck with it. I kinda like it, though - the Union Jack is representative of our heritage, and still can be without being indicative of our future.

We Australians are JUST NOT GOOD ENOUGH to stand on our own two feet.

WE Australlians are SUB-HUMAN and UTTERLY UNWORTHY of independence

WE MUST HIDE UNDERNEATH THE SKIRT OF THE QUEEN

SHE WILL PROTECT US AND TELL US WHAT TO DO

GOD SAVE THE QUEEN - STUFF EVERYBODY ELSE ON THE PLANET

AUSTRALIANS ARE AFRAID OF INDEPENDENCE - THEY JUST DONT HAVE THE INTERNAL CONFIDENCE

I must hand to the Americans though - they are never short of self belief (although this self belief is currently being tested on the international political stage and with its internal economic fragility - wait for the results in due course)

I agree with you. My solution is to make elections totally supported and paid for by the government, with set amounts for each candidate that hits certain benchmarks (hey - remember benchmarks?) in getting on ballots.

I would also allocate TV and Radio time to each candidate. That should be a condition for a license for any company that wishes to use United State's public-owned airspace.

It would be cheaper, shorter, and more focused.

I'd like to see the flag changed. I don't like the Union Jack, because it's not really our flag, it's a British flag. We should one that represents us, not Britain. I like the green one with the kangaroo on it, but anything that better represents our country would be good.

Hell, not that long. In the next ten years we'll be a Republic, I think.

Well, you're right, the Union Jack is the British flag. So that's why it's only in the corner of ours - it's not our whole flag. Our whole flag IS representative of us, not Britain - it has our beautiful Southern Cross on a night sky, with the Union Jack in the corner to illustrate our heritage. A nice mix, I think.

The US flag has the same thing - the stars part represents the original 13 colonies and therefore illustrates their heritage. In fact, on its own, the blue field of stars is a maritime flag known as a Union Jack. It's nice.

To let go of the Union Jack on our flag wouldn't be that big a deal, but I do feel that it would deny our ancestry, which would be a shame.
