Well then we would have to change our entire electoral system, as the President is not "selected" by his party but is directly voted for by the people of the nation.

We should become a Republic. We have use for the Queen, we do not need her, she has been here, what, three times since the fifties. Get rid of her.

I don't like the flag only because it has the stupid Union Jack on it. If we became a Republic we'd get to change it.

No we wouldn't have to change our entire electoral system. The minimalist model would see the Parliament elect the president. Remember the office of Prime Minister and the existence of the Cabinet isn't recognised either in English law or Australian law. It's merely a custom observed by the parliament. If a president were to be popularly elected then it would mean that there could be some argument about the legal and moral authority of a president over the PM. I'm okay with the parliament electing a figurehead president.

Same, if there is going to be any change, just keep it minimalist.

Amazing grace, how sweet the sound That sav’d a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found, Was blind, but now I see. ’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, And grace my fears reliev’d; How precious did that grace appear, The hour I first believ’d! Thro’ many dangers, toils and snares, I have already come; ’Tis grace has brought me safe thus far, And grace will lead me home. |

The PM isn't head of state. This is the balance thing. The PM is a rabid political animal. He or she has an agenda they must prosecute in the parliament. A president should be above partisan politics and in replacing the monarch needs to be removed from the day to day grubbery. The president, I think, needs to be in an analagous postion to the High Court (taking away that bastard Barwick) and should be above partisan politics - as is (theoretically) the monarch. The president should be a servant of the constitution.
