I'm an American but I think New Zealand is a great model for the world on the benefits of eliminating subsidies and allowing free trade. With no subsidies in other countries we could eliminate deficits, increase competition and free more from dependance on government.
You guys should be proud for having the guts to put farming subsidies to zero, if it worked in a farm dependent country like New Zealand, it can easily work in America.

I have some very distant cousins in Northern New Zealand who farm Kiwi fruit, I think. How is the weather there, is it warm most of the year?

As Rob Muldoon said, NZers emigrating to Australia raises the IQ of both countries. We get rid of the New Zealanders foolish enough to move there, and Australia gets an influx of relative normality.

Generally we are supportive of Kevin Rudd, John Howard was a bit of a joke here (I think in Australia too) because he was such a suck up to George Bush. Helen Clark is (still!?) prime minister, but we have elections this year and National looks like it's going to have good chances.

John Key, leader of National, is an absolute idiot. I wouldn't mind too much if National wins the elections, but they sure as hell better replace their leader. He got asked what his stance was on the Springbok tour of 81 (one of the most politically controversial events in NZ's history for all you outsiders) and he said he "forgot".

Hillary Clinton called Helen Clark the "former prime minister of NZ", and said that "if there was a nuclear war, the only things to rise from the ruins would be cockroaches and Helen Clark"

Well Rudds still ascendant after the election, the 2020 thing is still settling in and in NSW atleast corruption of variousparts of the state government and their response to it is kinda big- that and the looming State Labor conference which is going to be a show-down regards privatistaion of electricity.

Its odd really, they propose a new rail line that won't be completed for 15 years and get ads up about it within the wek, but ads discussing privatisation that will happen within the year? Bubcas.
