they probably won't be able to force bush to actually attatch spending cuts to his tax cuts, but at least they'll create gridlock in the process

Bush has this great plan, he's going to cut the deficit in half in 4 years.
of course the debt will be at about 9 trillion by then. lol funny thing though, kerry has the exact same plan.

I think the days of hard-nosed fiscal conservatives getting elected are over. Everyone wants something, and it always costs money. The politicians dish that money out to their constituents and supporters in order to keep their support. If they stop handing out the cash, they stop getting elected.
Everyone knows the debt is bad, yet no one wants to cut their budgets to pay down the debt. It angers me to hear senators complain about spending an extra 100 million on a project, when they are too ignorant to realize that today we spend nearly 1.5 billion dollars each and every day just to maintain the interest payment on the existing debt. And, of course, the debt is increasing. It's no different then most of the mentality of the people of this country: high debt due to high living standards, credit cards, and living right up to the edge of their income (very little extra cash, and they don't use it to pay down debt, they spend it). |

I am sorry but any plan/idea/propsal this administration comes up with has to be viewed with much scrutiny:
IRAQ - We will be welcomed with roses! IRAQ - Its oil production will pay for reconstruction within the year. IRAQ - We know exactly where those "annoying WMDs are" IRAQ - Afghanistan is free. WHAT??? HEALTHCARE COSTS - We found out the exact cost, didn't we? UN - Is in danger of becoming "obsolete" !! By the way, L. Brahimi , we need you!! Sigh!! Enough to make a man turn to drinking!!

and thats why I do not support him. Still, a fiscal conservative is more than just keeping the budget balanced. A true fiscal conservative is someone who also strives for a more efficient and accountable government. Its not just a matter of spending no more than you have. Its also about using what you have more wisely.
Also, there are more than 4 conservatives left in Congress. I know there were at least 55 fiscally conservative Republicans in the house who were at the point of open rebellion with Bush over the Medicare Reform Bill. Hassert left the vote open on the floor till 4 or 5 in the morning and he and Bush spent the night calling people to twist arms and make deals to finally get it passed. Seriously, the Republican party is a divided tent now. The social conservatives vs the fiscal conservatives. If the Democrats where smart, they would investigate to find the fault lines in the Republican party and exploit it. Seriosuly. The fiscally conservative branch of the Republican party is dissatisfied and Kerry's camp needs to do all they can to encourage low voter turnout in this part of Bush's base. Just my 2 cents. |
