This tax issues is just so simple. Just remove the word "tax deduction" from the dictionary. Remove the word "tax incentive" and create a flat tax.
Lets just say 10%. A person who makes $100.00 a year pays $10.00 in tax. A person who makes $1,000,000.00 a year pays $100,000.00 a year in tax. (Problem: most people educated in this country have no mathematical understating. 10% is 10%. $10.00<$100,000. The Rich pay more than the poor. Everybody pays their "FARE SHARE") Now the BIG ISSUE. What "D---" business is it of anybody on what I have left in my pocket. Who made others arbitrators of how much I have left. If you are anybody that believes in the Constitution of this country than let my labor and property to me. If not, you are just a socialist/communist who believes in redistributing someone else's wealth. Why not just take a gun and robbed people of there hard earned work. Its that simple. |

- - - how does a change in tax structure to a flat tax somehow make what's left in your pocket any more private and how is that flat tax less "socialist/communist"[sic] than the current structure?
Am I trying to connect two thoughts that you didn't mean to connect? I have to make two comments about your post and it's tone of superior knowledge along with a denigration of other people's math skills - first of all, the math you used is basic arithmetic and American education hasn't fallen so far that people can't figure out what 10% of something is, and secondly, for someone who is snearing at other people's knowledge you sure look silly spelling "FARE SHARE"[sic] like that. It's "FAIR" dear. A "fare" is something you pay to ride on the subway - or the merry-go-round. |

OK so now we have DBG insulting another poster, who simply attempted to open up a conversation about an idea which has been actively kicked around in our government for the last decade or so. It is a perfectly legitimate topic.
As far as his statement about most people having rudimentary math skills, that is (*)(*)(*)(*)ed true. If you truly were an "IT professional" in your make believe "profile" you would agree with him. Now you may be correct about one thing. It doesn't take a math genius to understand how a flat tax works. Even an average American like yourself can figure that out. That is indeed one of the touted benefits to that system. However, part of the reason people study math is that it develops logical thinking abilities. If you truly had the advanced logical thinking abilities that you so readily tout on this board, you would be capable of making the inference needed to arrive at the conclusion that a progressive tax is more socialistic than a flat tax. I'm not going to explain it to you because it is frankly so simple that I would rather let you walk around scratching your head for a few more minutes. Of course that would be after you get done flexing for yourself in the mirror while wearing a sock in your shorts and a John Kerry face mask. If you have nothing to contribute other than your inance proclamations of superiority, then haul ass. You should spend more time in school if that's all you can do. |

I favor a national sales tax over a flat tax. The national sales tax now before Congress would be a very interesting development, although it will never pass.

In the US as I am led to believe, everyone is taxed the same on everything, and it's a nice easy calculation 10% lovin' it. In England they put VAT on top of everything and it’s usually always included in the prices you see so no calculation is necessary. However, on things like wages and bank interest the tax varies according to how much you earn.
I don't like to admit ignorance, but when it is necessary I will. I'm only 16 and I have just started receiving letters from various organisations informing me that the government would like my money with a nice, completely incomprehensible table informing me how much money the government want. After several feeble attempts at reading the documents that seem to require some form of special qualification to understand and alleviate the need for a complaints department by ensuring that said document leaves the readers mind in such as slush that your not quite sure what it is you wanted to question. I would very much appreciate someone that could explain, in some language that does not require any form of special degree in quantum mechanics to read, how exactly the English system works and why the hell it hasn't been Americanised along with everything else!!

I like national sales tax also, to completely replace income taxes. This would eliminate all the complex tax code, the IRS division, and the national government would just use the same system that states have already in place for collecting local sales tax. It would save billions in court fees that the government needs to chase down tax-avoiders.
And of course many things would be 100% tax free, like basic food and clothes, one house, one car, school supplies, tuition, health care, etc. This would encourage people to eat healthy (no tax on fruits and veggies) and to save their money. |

National Sales Tax sounds good to me. Could you imagine the money that could be saved in our budget annually? We could build new schools or something. But we would probably just give it to the Dep of Defense.

As we all know, the vast majority of the taxes are paid by the wealthiest Americans. In fact, something like 75 or 80% of Americans either pay no taxes or pay less than they incurr in government benefits. So most Americans are getting either a full or partial free ride in terms of government services.
Now lets ask ourselves if there could possibly be any link between voter apathy and the fact that most voters do not feel the pain of government waste and corruption. Do you think more voters would care more about the decisions our politicans make if they were paying for their pro-rate share of government expenses incurred? Until you can tap into people's self-interest by linking government waste to thier own pain, you will never have meaningful reform. Inefficient government beaurocracies and huge government giveaways by both liberals and conservatives will never get the attention they deserve until a little more of that money is comming out of the average guy's pocket. |
