Default Senate blocks plan to add oil company tax

Senate Republicans have blocked just about every effort at legislation in their "take no prisoners" approach to politics, and that is going to hurt them this fall..... Except in one area. We don't need more taxes, and the GOP is right in opposing them.

If the oil companies are profiteering and gaming the system, then hearings need to be held, and those responsible held accountable. This is the American way, not raising taxes.

So this time, a big shout out from me to the Senate Republicans.

Article is here.

You do need more taxes, just not taxes on companies. The taxes should be on the consumer.

The federal government collects far more profits from oil and gas taxes compared to the Oil Majors profits of just 4%.

Unfortunately opposing taxes IS only one area.

It might be that if Obama gets elected the Republicans will realize what they've been doing wrong, but I try not to get my hopes up, just in case the whole party decides to follow the McCain platform...

I am torn on the issue. Part of me believes that taxing the companies would be a good idea; however, I also wonder if it might just increase the price of gas even more to supplement that loss. I think there should be hearings, though, on the profiteering that is coming from this. Few people are making a killing while the rest of us are losing so much. Something should be done. Regardless, this oil business could severely hurt the GOP this fall.

Enough with the bloody useless hearings! Is the US a humping democracy or is it not?

The laws are created by the Congress. Presumably the Congress has a reliable source of information regarding the state of the Union. So let the Congress propose a bill for taxing the consumers of oil or their derivatives. That, my friends, is the way it is done around the world.
