Default popular vote vs. the electoral college

the government is trying to reform the voting system. they are trying to make it to where instead of the Electoral college choosing the president they want the popular vote to. but if the popular vote choses the president then all a candidate needs to do is go after the big states like California Texas and New York. i totally think they should leave it the way it is. if not then they have just screwed up something else.

Default ...

Is there any other country anywhere that still utilizes this archaic system?
I can't think of any.

Default What Democracy?

I was told, that US is not Democracy, but Republic.
What kind of Republic?
For sure, not the Peoples Republic!
I will not vote, It sucks!
Or for sure, if I waste my time, I vote for Libertarian.
Getting tired, who is better??? One is 19, the other 20-1=19.
Until we have the choice of 2 parties, has no choice to register with out choose a side, there is no Democracy!
With this system we vote in someone, whom we might do not like at all!!!

Default RE

I used to be pretty strongly anti-electoral college... in fact i think i even voted "Change" in this poll a few months ago.

but i recently came across an argument for it which makes a lot of sense....

Basically, the electoral college is decentralized. This would make it much more difficult to rig the election.

Say you live in texas. Under the electoral college system, there is no motivation to fudge the election results past the 50% line. Whether 60% or 80% of texans vote for one party is irrelevent, the candidate gets the same ammount of votes.

In a popular vote system, the ruling party of the individual state would have a much better incentive to skew the local election results strongly in their favor.

Edit: also asside from the possible riging factor... this could lead to different parts of the country with 90% support for any one party. Which could mean civil war. Politicians should not be encouraged to try to solidify their support in just a few states, they should broaden it.

Default The original purpose of the Electoral College

Was to create the illusion that the "people had the power." The Founding Fathers were very much anti-populous (as were most at the time). They honestly believed that each state's electors would vote for a "home state candidate," therefore preventing a majority win in the Electoral College. And this would throw the election into the House of Representatives.

At the time, no one imagined two parties would come to take power and effectively limit the choice to two candidates, which is why they thought no single person could win a majority.

Default Land of the Fascists & the Home of the Beuracracy

We cant choose the President, we cant make laws, we cant decide supreme court justices, and the two-party system limits our "choices". What !#&%ed up democracy and/or republic is this?

Default It makes no sense.

You have the people vote. Then, you have people vote for the people that voted. Why can't we streamline the system and give everyone an equal say? That way, smaller states would have a smaller share of the governance, while larger states would have a larger share accordingly and perfectly proportionally. BTW I also dislike the Senate. North Dakota should NOT have as much say in the US government as California.

Change the outdated system....

Default ...

...Just to clear this up as I see some people ask, America is not a democracy. Democracies always fail when the people realize they can just vote themselves benefits. The founding fathers knew that and did not want to set up a democracy, instead they set up a Constitutional Republic.

There's your answer... America = Constitutional Republic
