Default Stéphane Dion voted Leader of Canadian Liberals

Quote:
Dark horse candidate Stéphane Dion surged from fourth to first to claim the federal Liberal leadership, defeating Michael Ignatieff on Saturday in the final ballot.

Dion garnered 2,521 votes in the fourth-round tally, or about 54 per cent of the delegates, ahead of Ignatieff, who received 2,084 votes, or about 45 per cent.

The new leader, who initially was given little chance to win, hailed his fellow candidates surrounding him on stage as a "Liberal Dream Team" that would defeat Prime Minister Stephen Harper's Tory government.

"We do not believe the Conservatives have bad intentions; we simply believe they lead to bad results," he said.

Stéphane Dion is a well-known Quebec Liberal who has overcome great odds to earn the privledge to become the leader of the Liberal party. Although he speaks poor English, he has significant experience in the Liberal party, including various cabinet portfolios. He is known for very clearly stating his positions and being soft-spoken at times.

Can he overcome the Harper government? There is a long history of Canada of Quebecers having great success at becoming Prime Minister. Dion is strong on the environment, which is slowly becoming the most important issue among Canadians. He also has a great amount of experience. With professionals helping Dion on his English, Harper will have his hands full dealing with the Liberal party.

There will definitely be an election soon. Look for the Liberals and another party to bring down the Conservative government in the near future.

If there is an election, it would probably end up as a Liberal minority, leading to another election AGAIN... Liberals will be strong in their usual places like quebec and Ontario, they suck in western canada. But then again who really cares about the "west" anyway, not the Liberals.

Default Dion

Its not looking too good for Dion and the Liberals. He doesn't seem to be uniting the party, and they don't really seem to be an advocate on any single issue. On the war in Afghanistan the Liberals don't want Canada to extend its commitment in 2009, but the New Democratic party wants an immediate pull-out, which might be more appealing to the anti-war left.

The lower-tax, tough on crime, hawkish, pro-decentralization Conservative party of Stephen Harper seems to be holding its own.

Default Yeah...

The Harper Government is winning, and has won. But the Stéphane Dion Government seems like it would work better for the country.

But it's what the people want that matters, right?
