Default Sell the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation

CBC Opt Out... or privatize the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation — As soon as possible!

I added my name to the National Citizens Coalition petition to defund the CBC. However, I believe they ought to privatize the broadcasting corporation. Break it up in parts and sell them. Then the money can go to pay down debt.

Really? I love the CBC...well, radio anyway. Can't say I care a lot for CBC TV.

I seem to remember is used to be pretty good, though.

Personally, I'd like the CBC to adopt some of BBC's type of platform. They always seem to have some really interesting documentaries coming out. I know that BBC radio is absolutely fantastic.

I also don't support a government run media outlet that only chooses to provide you with the news they want you to hear.

Are you aware that BBC funding is obtained from every citizen with a means to receive a broadcasting signal, whether they watch BBC or not?

At the moment the cost is £145 per year ($230) raising $5.5 billion annually which is why the BBC can afford to offer the programmes they do, yet the output and content is in an ever descending spiral. CBC, given the same means of funding could not raise a tenth of that, yet placing it in the public domain would fragment output to dozens of stations, all wanting a fee for viewing and listening.

As bad as the system is, you should not want what you wish for without being aware of the possible consequences.

By selling and privatizing the CBC you further entrench the monopolistic way of business in Canada. It will become even more difficult for private radio stations and television stations to compete when there is a nation wide Canadian channel backed by multimillionaires. Or even worse, the CBC is divided up to become a large number of medium sized monopolies fighting among each other as well as pre-existing monopolies. These offshoots of the CBC will gobble up the remaining private stations in an effort to expand their domain.

As it stands the CBC, and Canada as a whole, is much better off the way it is now in comparison.
