House of Commons votes to let U.S. War Resisters stay in Canada

Quote:
OTTAWA, June 3 /CNW/ - The Opposition parties in the House of Commons
joined together today to adopt a recommendation which, if implemented, would
make it possible for U.S. Iraq War resisters to obtain Permanent Resident
status in Canada.
The recommendation was adopted by a majority of Members of Parliament
from the Liberal, Bloc Québécois, and New Democratic Parties. The
Conservatives voted against the motion.
The motion, which originated in the House of Commons Standing Committee
on Citizenship and Immigration in December 2007, calls on the government to
"immediately implement a program to allow conscientious objectors and their
immediate family members...to apply for permanent resident status and remain
in Canada; and...the government should immediately cease any removal or
deportation actions...against such individuals."
Corey Glass, 25, a war resister who came to Canada in 2006 and was
recently told to leave Canada by June 12 or face removal to the United States,
welcomed the vote. "I'm thankful that the MPs voted to let me and the other
war resisters stay in Canada. I'm also thankful to all the Canadians who urged
their MPs to support us."
"This is a great victory for the courageous men and women who have come
to Canada because they refuse to take part in the illegal, immoral Iraq War,
and for the many organizations and individuals who have supported this
campaign over the past four years," said Lee Zaslofsky, Coordinator of the War
Resisters Support Campaign and a Vietnam War deserter who came to Canada in
1970....

Now I know many of you will say. They signed up, they knew they had to an obligation to their contract.
But I think many of these people were kids fresh out of high school and they do live in a country that in indoctrinated with military propaganda and many got caught up in Bush misleading the public about the Iraq-Al Qaeda. connections.

I can guarantee this won't be implimented. Harper, leader of the Conservatives, supported the Iraq war. In his mind, this is a joke, and hes probably going to instruct the RCMP to remove these illegals.

if we're not going to hang them,
id rather have them in Canada than in the US.
so if Canada wants them,
they can definitely keep them.
give them Canadian citizenship,
and their 'freedom' to cross the border should be denied.

in my humble American opinion,
of course.

How is this good news? While I am content to see anything that throws a spanner into the US war plans (at least the foolish Iraq ones), I can't help but think that allowing war resisters stay here in defiance of a contract they signed and American law is a bad thing. Had these guys been conscripted into the army, then I could see a case, but they chose to enter the army. Not withstanding the jingoistic military propaganda in the US and A, it's wrong to expect a foreign country to shelter someone from their own mistakes. It kind of makes a mockery of real refugees.

Oh. When I opened the thread, I was hoping it was about this --

Saskatchewan government to spend $12.4 million on nursing recruitment and retention

Anne Kyle, Leader-Post

Published: Thursday, June 19, 2008

REGINA -- The provincial government will be spending $12.4 million on a three-year paid mentorship program for new nursing school graduates as part of its nurse recruitment and retention initiatives.

"I think it is a good thing that we get an opportunity to work with someone who has been in the workforce and been on a certain unit for a number of years,'' said Janelle Adams, a second-year nursing student who hopes to fast-track her studies and graduate in the fall of 2009.

"I think it takes a lot of stress and anxiety off of us that when we come out of school we know that there will be somebody who can help us transition into a full-time job.''

Health Minister Don McMorris, who made the announcement Thursday, said $7.4 million of the money will be used to guarantee new registered nurse and registered psychiatric graduates full-time supernumerary positions to work alongside experienced nurses to gain valuable on-the-job experience. The paid mentorship will vary from the two to four months based on the individual graduate's confidence and competency level.

Without going into my thoughts on the Iraq war, I'll say that if implemented, that would be cheating America in the worst possible way. If war isn't your thing, don't join the military for christ's sake.
