Default Why they killing cute babi seals in Canada?

Canada's largest seal cull for more than 50 years is taking place despite protests by environmentalists and animal rights groups.
The government is allowing more than 300,000 seals to be killed, arguing that the campaign is both ecologically sound and economically justified.

Default It is ecologically sound to an extent;...

...there are so many seals that they are severely depleting the fish stocks. It's economically sound because they use wooden clubs to bludgeon the seals instead of wasting money on a so called "more human" method of killing them.

Look, this is a society where ice hockey and curling are the preferred sporting activities. What did you expect...?

Seriously, as long as baby seal pelts bring money, and the government allows it, it's going to happen. A lot of animals are killed every day for one human purpose or another, but most aren't a cute as baby harp seals.

The environmental issues center around the fact that the natural predators have been largely eliminated by humans, so the seal population has exploded. I leave it to you whether getting clubbed is preferable to getting torn apart alive by a predator.

BTW, seals lose a lot of their charm if you live around them. The are among the most wasteful eaters on the planet. Rather than catching one salmon and eating the entire fish, seals prefer to take each bite out of the belly a new fish. I've sat and watched an adult seal kill a dozen salmon just to have dinner, and leave most of each fish to rot. I've also watched five seals station themselves at a pinch point, such as a small waterfall, and effectively kill off an entire run of fish over the course of a few days. This is not good or bad, it simply happens. However, it is a factor in managing fisheries.
