In the opening post it only says he gives up his pension and bonuses, not his salary!! He still brings home enough bacon!!!

Anyway, it is still a good and inspiring gesture in these tough times where so many ordinary Canadians are put hard to task to provide just the basics for their families. I see it every day!

Thanks, Frogen, you expressed it very nicely.
Why? He gave it back to a large conglomerate in Bell and a large bank this time...

Would it not have been better for society to have accepted the money and then donating it all (after taxes) to charity?

Why is it better for Desjardins to have the millions than Sabia?
Large Corporations are more ethical than individual people?

Is that your message?

No, it was a publicly traded company.

Was it a monopoly? Did other companies offer the same service?

Complicated answer. Short answer is no.

Deregulation has been a long process in Canada, but at no point was he an executive with Bell Canada when it was a true monopoly.

In that case, it was what the market would bear...

No, I don't think Bell was ever a government owned monopoly, they were just super greedy while they had the monopoly.

I understand WHY I'm being chided for applauding Sabio. He made no real sacrifice by giving up his pension and bonuses for the next few years. The point, though, is that there are lots of rich people like him who do not give up any spectacular amount. they might give regularly to charity - we don't know that. It is possible that Sabio chose to forego his pension rather than giving it to some charity, because this way he would get into the news. Maybe that's what he wanted.

I'm not chiding you, my friend. Please don't ever take the general tone on these boards as a serious admonition.

I was asking some serious questions that I didn't know the answers to, about the nature of he Bell monopoly and so on.

I apologize if my tone sounded strident. It was not my intention

No no... not you, Atlas!!! My fault for making it sound I meant you. I really thought of someone else, but didn't want to mention a name.
I apologize - I am sorry.

Married to me?

Please, let's leave your lusting loins out of this conversation.

Yes I can accept his choices I am just questioning why this is necesarily the best thing for soceity when you look objectively at the facts and as well, how this makes him a 'true Canadian'?
