Cities differ greatly from one to the other. Some are alike some vastly different. It's a matter of personal taste. What one finds beutifull another may find ugly. No need in getting worked up over it either way. Afterall the Mercer list does'nt make it official now does it?
As far as Canadian cities go, and i've been to most, Vancouver tops my list. Montreal and old Quebec city would be about tied for second. Calgary was nice as well as Victoria.
Canadian cities i found ugly were Edmonton and Toronto. I've lived in both. Don't get me wrong. They both have some areas that are nice, but overall i consider them ugly.
As far as nightlife and entertainment go, Montreal and Toronto top my list.

I declined a transfer to Calgary for these reasons. Calgary and Toronto are the two cities in Canada I wouldn't live.

I've never been to Toronto but I intend to soon so I won't pass judgement on it...Calgary is pleasant enough, not ugly, not spectacular...life is rushed, daily traffic horrid, parking impossible... expensive but not as bad as Vancouver...crime is low except for the gang violence, but as long as they kill each other no one really cares....it's just bland , I can live here 20 yrs and it will never feel like home, it's just not a place you get attached too, IMO....but! the view of the Rockies and the quick access to them is truely awesome...

Greatness? Personally i would rather live in most Canadian cities than some of the American ones i've been too. I would'nt call Boise, Louisville, or Detroit "great" as examples. And i am perfectly sane. Having said that, there are some nice American cities i would live in.
As far as the Mercer list i would agree that Vancouver BC is one of the nicest cities of the world.

I've been to Calgary on a few occasions. Never lived there. As far as rushed, horrid traffic and impossible parking, take that and multiply it by 2 then you have Toronto. Probably twice the gang violence as well. As far as pleasantry and scenery i would place Calgary above Toronto or Edmonton. Edmonton is pleasant enough but no scenery LOL.

OK fair enough Frodly. I honestly thought that you were serious there.
Two American cities i liked were New Orleans and Las Vegas. If you seek nightlife and entertainment i would deffinately recommend going to Las Vegas. That would top my list for N. America in that department.
