How decent of our universities!!
Four Canadian universities will be covering the cost of tuition for the children of soldiers killed in the line of duty to help them complete undergraduate degrees starting this fall. http://tinyurl.com/l2y4wz They have my applause! |

There have only been slightly more than 100 Canadian service personnel killed in Afghanistan and Canada does not have a military mission in Iraq. While I would agree this is a good thing it is really very insignificant and should have been covered by survivor benefits already.

Awesome move, if only some American Universities had the same balls to do the same.

Only 100? We have the 3rd highest casualty rate in Afghanistan after the US and UK.

That is very cool. Maybe the legislature ought to consider establishing a scholarship fund for the children of fallen soldiers in the US. It'd be hard for a school to voluntarily do that here. As was pointed out, there are significantly more children of fallen soldiers here. If one school agreed to give them free schooling, but not many others did the same, they could end up with 500 students that were not paying tuition, which could force maybe even a school out of business. The total cost wouldn't be that high on the national scale, but it could be very high for one school.

How many fallen soldiers does the US have? Over 4000 or so? That could add up to a nice little sum, but as Shiva says it is not really necessary, because the survivor benefits already would take care of that.

Sorry to hear your brother in law passed away, but that's good to know the benefits are working. In my opinion, we don't take very good care of our surviving veterans, but if we at least take decent care of the families of those who don't, that's a start.
