Default Musharraf imposes emergency rule

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/7076670.stm

Quote:
Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf has declared emergency rule and suspended the country's constitution.
Troops have been deployed inside state-run TV and radio stations, while independent channels have gone off air.

Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry, who condemned the moves, has been replaced and is being confined to the Supreme Court with 10 other judges.

It comes as the court was due to rule on the legality of Gen Musharraf's re-election victory in October.
So it looks like "our" friend has decided he doesn't like the ruling from the high court so he suspend what limited democracy Pakistan has left.

No, actually, he is responding to a string of suicide bombings all across the country by islamofascists, including the despicable one against Benazir Bhutto. A big chunk of his country is out of the reach of the law and controlled by islamofascists. What would happen in the US if those conditions occurred?

Default wrong

That may be his excuse

There have been suicide bombers every week in Pakistan for several years now - so that feeble excuse just does not wash.

The High court was set to rule against him stading as President and also a serving military officer

Self-denying Ordinance is the issue

Yeah, man - we're getting screwed again.

This always happens, right?

We "get into bed" with the wrong people, and they do something stupid, and all of a sudden we've got egg on our faces too.

(and I'm not going to say a word about Bushie in this thread.... )

I mean, this is kinda what happens when we have an "unprincipled" foreign policy, right?

When everything we do is out of "expedience", rather than any kind of clearly defined long-term goal.

You know, it's like, here we've been for years, selling nukes to both the Indians and the Pakistanis, knowing full well that BOTH of those guys have some very serious internal political issues -

And I mean, when something happens like this, all you can kinda do from the sidelines, is sit there and say, "I told you so". Right? I mean, it's a little too late for anything else, right?

Yeah, well... so one of the interesting things here, is going to be tracking the State Department's behavior on this thing. If they're true to form, what'll likely happen is that there will be much saber-rattling and maybe even some talk of "sanctions" or something, 'cause that 'll allow them to justify to themselves that they're concerned.....

And meanwhile, we'll pat Musharraf on the back and point him to the rest of the "terrorists" in his country.....

And I mean, yeah - this is all too transparent, right?

I love the way some Americans and their partners are starting to turn against Pakistan the same way they are against Russia. These two countries have been allies for the most part.

It's not a "totalitarian" move. The US is a country which sent the 101st Airborne Division into a state for nothing more than a school desgregation. Do you really think that if a quarter of the US were taken over by extremists, and were pushing hard to take over the rest, that the US wouldn't declare martial law? Actually, it has already happened - Abraham Lincoln (a totalitarian, right?) declared martial law during the civil war. Read up on your history, then come back when you know something.

Give it up, DB. He'll never answer your question. He won't even "get it".
