Doesn't matter at all.

We worry about "the rules" because that's exactly what makes us better than terrorists.

I'm not advocating abandoning "the rules" however it doesn't matter if we're "better than the terrorists" for following the rule of law if we're dead. Who gives a crap if they use our rules against us?

In the end doesn't that tell you how effective the rules are?

We're not dead, are we?

If we're not fighting for our way of life; our system, what the hell are we fighting for?

What happened to "give me liberty or give me death"?

Now it's, "Do what we have to do so we don't die."

Well how do you know? What makes you think they are not looking at their political enemies. How do you know that when democrats get into office, they won't use this to dig for dirt on republican opponents?

The fact of the matter is you don't know and you can NOT be sure of it because there is no external oversight to keep the program limited to the "bad guys" you speak of.

It is called checks and balances and it is there for a reason. A program needs oversight, and not from within the same program or that is not oversight.

That's a great point; imagine Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama with this power, and you'll get it.

It is called a police state if you don't limit the authority of the police with the courts.

According to your logic, the police should be allowed to perform physical searches anywhere at anytime without warrent. I mean if you are not a pothead or something, what do you have to hide?

apparently, Constitutional rights are dated and should be ignored

so the dark side, in a thread about FBI illegally obtaining privileged information without a warrant, insists (1) the government doesn't do that kind of thing - that's the very topic of the thread people and (2) it's not a big deal because that Constitutional right to privacy is outdated

make your best case to amend the Constitution if you think those words need revision but do not tolerate our rights being ignored in the false belief that doing so actually makes us safer

I don't know what you think the government is looking for but I can assure you they are not spying on your grandma or what flavor of internet porn you like. They're not looking for e-mails between you and your mistress or your drug dealer. They are looking into people with known ties to terrorists or people who may pose a threat to national security so unless you fall into that category you really are just worrying way too much.

Perhaps you might want to ask some of the relatives of any of those folks who were in the WTC on 9/11/01.
