Well, if you'll recall......Mayor Nagin of New Orleans first estimated that up to 10,000 had died in Katrina. It's turned out to be less than 1/10th that number.

Here's one that I hope the earthquake DID get: Osama bin Laden.

Wouldn't that just be divine justice? Allah killing bin Laden on the very day that al Qaeda had planned another NY city attack? October 9th.

Well, we can all hope that Allah got his target!!!

Nagin orignally estimated it at "hundreds or even thousands" without adding any specific details. The 10,000 estimate appeared about 2 weeks after the hurricane hit.

and it hasn't turned out to be less than 1/10th of it, because we don't have the final tally, and we won't for months. They called off the official government "search and recovery" but thats only because they outsourced the job to the private sector, and put less focus on it. The ninth ward still hasn't been thouroughly searched.

Yes: the 10,000 number came from Nagin. And yes....the final number is known. Not to say a few more may crop up....but it won't be many if any at all.

NEW ORLEANS - The search for bodies of people killed by Hurricane Katrina has ended in Louisiana, and more searches will be conducted only if someone reports seeing a body, a state official said Monday.

NEW ORLEANS - The search for bodies of people killed by Hurricane Katrina has ended in Louisiana, and more searches will be conducted only if someone reports seeing a body, a state official said Monday.

From your source:

Quote:
But Kenyon International Emergency Services, the private company hired by the state to remove the bodies, is on call if any other body is found, said Bob Johannessen, a spokesman with the state Department of Health and Hospitals.

“There might still be bodies found — for instance, if a house was locked and nobody was able to go into it,” Johannessen said.
Also from your source:

Quote:
FEMA did nearly 23,000 secondary searches in New Orleans with about a dozen teams.

From my source:

Quote:
According to the U.S. Census there were about 213,000 homes in New Orleans parish in 2002.

Mike McDaniel, the secretary of the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality, said Thursday that between 140,000 and 160,000 homes need to be leveled.

Default clarification... again..

i'm not trying to indicate that 10,000 were killed in New Orleans, because you are right, the figure seems to be much lower. You are correct, the 10,000 figure came from nagin, but that was a couple weeks after his original estimate which said "hundreds or even thousands".

I am saying that the number will certainly keep rising. Recent news reports should not be taken as any indication that they are done searching or the death toll will stop rising.

As they said a couple few weeks ago, an accurate toll won't be known for months.

...

another thing, lets get back to the topic, i'll try to stop hijacking this.

that this might get Bin Laden. That would be some consolation for all the innocent people killed in this natural disaster.

Yeah, you've got to respect a god who kills 30,000 innocent people in order to get one bad guy.

What a bizarre way to look at things. I certainly hope that the earthquake got a lot of bad guys. But to view it as "divine justice" is just.... wrong.
