Enzi's proposal would provide tax and regulatory relief for small business, permit tips to be credited in complying with minimum wage hikes and expand the small business exemption from the Fair Labor Standards Act.

The Kennedy amendment to a spending bill went down 51-47, and the GOP alternative 57-42. Under a Senate agreement, they would have needed 60 votes for approval.

It is unfortunate. But we'd probably do better to try to control prices, especially prices for those things that are necessities. In order for increased wages to help, only the lowest wages would have to increase. But when minimum wage goes up, so typically do other wages. Wage is not just a number. It is the ability to get needed things and is dependent on other variables.
It is called minimum wage because it is the minimum that a company is forced to pay their employees. If it weren't for minimum wage, people would still be working as basically slaves. Not that what they make now is much better.

Besides, companies typically will increase other wages because they WANT to, not because they HAVE to. Minimum wage would go up because it has to. Companies COULD agree to maintain the wages of higher paid employees and things would be fine, but people are greedy and can't stand it when they see that someone who didn't go to college is actually making ends meet for once.

It is not a competition, yet these people want minimum wage to remain low, to keep the poor down, away from their level. Keep them down, so they can't afford to send their kids to college, and keep the cycle going.

And I'm not going to pretend that these people are only conservative republicans....this is something that both parties are at fault for. People need to understand that because of this trend to always have your wages go up when minimum wage goes up, affects inflation and we are back where we started. People need to understand that just because their poor neighbors got a new car finally, doesn't mean that they have to go out and buy 2 new cars, each worth 4 times as much as the one car the poor people bought. People need to understand that it would be good for our economy overall if poor people were made a little bit richer. They would be able to spend more, they would be able to invest more, save more, they would get off of government programs...not all but some.

I don't know, maybe I'm just wasting my breath. Go ahead keep the wage low, and continue to ask for a raise each year of about 3.5%. greedy sons of (*)(*)(*)(*)(*)es

Yes, which is why one of the poorest members on the board (Me) is a staunch Conservative. Or let me guess perhaps I'm a new uncle tom? Oh BTW why haven't you yelled down with the bourgeois yet? I mean if you really want to make a class envy/warfare statement might as well do it right .
If you truely are poor, "one of the poorest members" among us, and also a conservative...I hate to break it to you, but you are cutting your own throat without even knowing it. My father is the same way. Very poor, yet he votes republican time and time again, only to be let down by them each and every time. Why does he continue to vote for them, because he feels that they are protecting us from terrorists. In other words he bought the propaganda that the Democratic party can't protect us from Terrorism. Mind you the last time we were attacked, the most famous in history was under the rule of the Republican party....But let's not get into that whole argument.

This thread is about why minimum wage is so low, and not only that, why do Conservatives tend to vote no each and every time when it comes up for an increase?
Your Dad is smart. Obviously YOU have bought into the Democrat propaganda which is that they are FOR the "little people." If that were true, then everytime they came into power they would have resolved the problem of poor and the homeless. But funny.....everytime they DO come into power, it's as if neither of those problems exist.

What the Democrats are very good at is keeping the "little people" down.

And as far as Wal-Mart and wages.....there is NOTHING stopping them from doubling or tripling the wages of those at the bottom in their stores. NOTHING.

Default If Wal-Mart raised the wages paid to their current slaves..

...they'd have to increase the percentage of "Made In America" merchandise imported from China up to 80% just to keep the obscene profits at the same level....

In a way agree with you welfare is outdate and need to be changed, but you conservative want to get rid of it.

If wal-mart wants to the minium wage to be raised why don't they do it themselves for their own workers, this is not socialist country, we don't have govt-runned industries. Wal-Mart just want to look good and gain some sympthy to the common American buyer.

How in the hell does ten billion dollars in profits last year add up to a "thin profit margin?"

He noted, however, that the company might stand to gain if Wal-Mart shoppers -- many of whom are of modest means -- had more money in their wallets.
And what the hell is this crap supposed to mean? Is he blaming poor customers for Wal-Mart inability to raise wages? What a f---ing jerk!

Wal-Mart doesn't need a raise in the minimum wage to raise their own wages. They can do anytime they want. This is all a BS publicity stunt to make them look good, just like their pathetic radio commercials going on and on about how even a cart pusher can move up to district manager in their company. Blah, blah, blah.

How in the hell does ten billion dollars in profits last year add up to a "thin profit margin?" [/quote] Because profit margins are measured as a percentage of sales rather than in absolute dollars. So, without knowing the gross sales figure as well as the net profit figure, you cannot figure what the profit margin is. Now, let's do a little math here. How to eliminate $10 billion in profits. Give each of 1.7 million employees raises in the amount of $5,882.35/year (salary) or $2.83/hour (wages). Do you really think people should invest money in business hoping to make zero profit?

Default No wonder I hate Wal-Mart

Ah, theo, but you forget. Using Scott's logic about poor people, um excuse me, "people of modest means" spending their money at Wal-Mart, we would have to conclude that if he gave his employees (most of whom are people of modest means) a raise, much of the raise would be spent at Wal-mart. So, if he gave his employees a $1.00 an hour raise, his cost would only be 3.4 billion, BUT his sales would increase to compensate.

So what's he afraid of? I mean if he truly believes what he's saying.

Default Why Wal-Mart is pushing for minimum wage increase

Okay, I've calmed down now and can speak rationally. Thanks Theo for explaining about profit margins. My knowledge of economics is even less than that of politics.

Wal-Mart is getting a lot of bad publicity because of criticism about their low wages and poor benefits. In fact, a Wal-Mart proposal for NYC was recently rejected because New Yorkers didn't like Wal-Mart's wage policies. Therefore, they are trying to reshape their image as a company who cares about its employees. Now, it is true that not all of the 1.7 million employees are making minimum wage. It would look bad for Wal-Mart to only raise wages for those making minimum wage, and to raise wages overall would put them above their profit margin. Therefore, pushing the government to raise the minimum wage would allow them to only raise wages for those making minimum wage and still save face.

This is a major dilemma for a company trying to keep prices low to appeal to "people of modest means."

What you are failing to understand is that increasing the minimum wage won't help the poor. I know it seems counter-intuitive, but LOTS of things in economics are. If it were that easy, why not make the minimum wage $50,000 a year? Any thoughts on what might happen?
