Default New German chancellor asks Bush to close Gitmo prisons

This would be Angela Merkel, the new *conservative* chancellor.

The US version of conservative and european conservative is quite different and not neccessarily comparable. Some of what certain Republicans publically voice would be considered nationalistic and hence they would be stamped Neo-Nazi's in Germany.

Regardless, she has a right to point out the obvious wrong being done to those people. I doubt her expectation was that Bush would give in. He never gave a rat's @$$ about anyone or any international treaties the US has signed (e.g. Geneva Convention etc.), so why would he care now what anyone else sais.

Regardless. Merkel will be much more up his alley than Schroeder was. Schroeder boldly told him to go to hell and the good ol' boy didn't like it. How dare he think for himself and do what the German people wanted (stay the **** BEEP **** out of the Iraq thing).

More conservative than the last German chancellor.

Excuse me, but have these people -- you know the ones you are implying are "trying to kill innocent Americas" -- been convicted of something? Perhaps you are unaware, but the US has ROUTINELY released people from GITMO (after years of illegal confinement, of course). Obviously the released people weren't trying to "trying to kill innocent Americans," right? After all, if the converse were true, the US wouldn't have released them, right?

People who support GITMO try to paint the rest of us as people who don't care that these people are trying to kill innocent Americans. Instead, all we want is for these people to get the rights afforded under international law. Perhaps you would understand this if someone you cared about were rounded up and imprisoned for a few years without the opportunity to prove his or her innocence.

Default Right.

If they are terrorists then it should be easy to prove in a court, right? Isn't that the system the "land of the free" uses? Someone is not a terrorist become Rumsfeld says they are. If they are terrorists then by all means lop their heads off. Fine. But at least show that they are. And here's another thought: If they were not terrorists before they sure as hell are now.
