Great read from the BBC. Obtained by George Washington University via the Freedom of Information Act.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/4655196.stm The Orwellian implications strengthen. Notice the reference to American media and the effectiveness of military propaganda through it. There could be a few faithful consumers/lab rats on here Apparently, the deception our military leaders are trying to convince others of is beginning to turn up here in the States. The Disinformation Superhighway. Rumsfeld, who signed off the Operation, seems to think it necessary to be able to destroy all communications worldwide through electomagnetic warfare. I bet they wish it was the old days, when only 3 networks dictated information to the civilian population. Much easier to control than these (*)(*)(*)(*)ed internets. And all in the name of fighting the "enemy", whether it be Eurasia or Europa (Orwellian reference to those unfamiliar).

And if you liked that, you will absolutely love this one. Here is a BBC article from December. In this article, the Bush Administration is quite concerned from reports that the Pentagon was planting stories in Iraq, and Scott McClellan said the U.S. was "a leader when it comes to promoting and advocating a free and independent media around the world."
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/4490324.stm Lo and behold they were behind it all along, with the Sec. of Defense signing off on its actions. Do the lies ever cease with this administration?

The only part of that entire spiel I have a problem with is the propaganda. We should not be lying in any sort of official capacity. Rumor-spreading is one thing; deliberately trying to plant false stories is another.
This isn't just an ethical concern, it's a practical one. The revelation that the government was not being totally truthful about the situation in Vietnam eventually led to an almost complete lack of trust in that government -- nobody believed a word we said. Our credibility is an important weapon -- and one that we can easily destroy through reliance on lies. But as far as acknowledging the effects and implications of a networked world, and figuring out ways to counter or attack those networks if necessary -- duh. That's what defense planning is all about.

Damage control:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060127/...NlYwMlJVRPUCUl Their not lying, it's truthful, accurate information. HAHA. That's why psyops officers are writing it and inserting it into the media huh? I'm sure this will satisfy the apologists who have been absent on this thread. I can hear it now...."But it's truthful, accurate propaganda" Here's your grazing pasture, little sheep. Please consume the propaganda, ahem, I mean fair & balanced news article. It's all over now, go back to sleep and dream sweet little dreams.

For those who want to judge for themselves, here are the documents. Many references are blacked out still.
http://www.gwu.edu/~nsarchiv/NSAEBB/NSAEBB177/index.htm BTW, it is against the law for the government to propagandize to Americans....not that law matters much these days, but just saying.

I thinks it's a mixed issue. On the one hand the US military needs to look at the Net as a new battlefield. On the other hand now we can't believe anyone 100%. All sources of information will be suspect.
