The same group that celebrated at Matthew Shepard's funeral and held signs claiming that he went to hell is now reaching for even greater depths of evil:
Shirley Phelps-Roper, Phelps' daughter and an attorney for the church, said states cannot interfere with their message that the soldiers were struck down by God because they were fighting for a country that harbors homosexuals and adulterers. (Later in the Article) Missouri's bill was named for Army Spc. Edward Lee Myers, 21, whose wife went to his funeral an hour early to try to avoid protesters. They were already across the road, holding signs that read "God Hates (*)(*)(*)(*)" and "God Made IEDs," a reference to roadside bombs. Her 5-year-old son kept asking why "mean people" were outside, undercover agents were in the church, and she worried that angry relatives might start a fight. "I couldn't even pay my last respects because of everything that was going on," Jean Myers said. Legislation against funeral protests was also introduced in West Virginia last month after a small knot of protesters from Westboro Baptist demonstrated outside a memorial for the 12 men killed in the Sago Mine disaster. The protesters held signs reading, "Thank God for Dead Miners," "God Hates Your Tears" and "Miners in Hell," arguing that the miners' deaths were a sign of God's wrath at America for tolerating gays. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060206/...BhBHNlYwM5NjQ- Let's hope this legislation passes.

Fortunately, they have only about 75 members, but they manage to hurt a lot of people. I remember going to a Baptist school (my parents were looking for a private school and it was the first one available) for two months before my parents found out how extreme it was. The people who ran it wouldn't have done anything like this, but their frantic division of the world into the "saved" and the "unsaved" was very disturbing.

They do have every right to say anything they want, but I think protesting at a funeral crosses the line of decency. No one should have to deal with such inhuman taunts while trying to pay their last respects for a lovedone.
If there is any justice left in this country, the bill to ban funeral protests should go through without any trouble.

After hearing these new news stories about this group it becomes more apparent how much extremist groups from the USA and the MiddleEAST who use religion for evil are alike. As a matter of fact maybe the wackodakyls on late night radio are correct - some prtion of the entities on this earth originally did come from out there - the planet Uranus.

Joker knows that most organized religions do not commit such actions. It should be noted, however, that the behavior of the Westboro cult is indicative of a problem in how some so-called religious people distort religion to serve their own hateful ends. Certain followers of the Christian Identity movement have robbed banks. What is their "justification"? They hate Jews and they claim that Jews control our banking system. Some people use religion to improve themselves. Others use it to "justify" what they wanted to do all along.
