I'm currently reading David McCullough's 1776. It appears that during the siege of Boston (when the British were in Boston surrounded by the Continental Army), the British send out starving women and children to cross the lines and be taken care of by the Americans. However, General Howe, the commander of the British army in Boston, only picked women and children suffering from smallpox, hoping to infect the Continental Army.

Gen. Washington was smart enough to realize that and kept the Boston refugees quaranteened from his army.

Apparently, biological warfare had been practiced long before that if Gen. Washington realized the implications of what Gen. Howe was doing.

Just an interesting sidenote, but I think indicative of the European (and consequently American) mindset that using biological warfare was a commonly used technique of warfare. Makes it much more likely in my view that Americans did deliberately infect American Indians with smallpox and other contagious diseases, and sadly, the American Indians had never seen such technique before and could not recognize that they were being deliberately decimated by germs.
