This is an example of what I mean when I say we don't even hear the tip of the iceberg as to what is going on over there. The only reason we are hearing this is a reporter stumbled onto it. The military didn't even investigate it for two months, not until an article appeared in TIME. I don't think these Marines are murderers; I believe this is what happens when you are fighting in a war that you know your government entered you into illegally. The poor guys don't know who to trust. They know we were all lied to. They have too much pride to go AWOL, but the mental stress of being stuck in an illegal invasion must be tremendous. On a somewhat related note, I heard this morning that EVERY American alive today will pay for this war the rest of their lives, including ALL infants.

Your own words get at the crux of the matter. "The enemy lurks among civilians." In this case, civilians ARE the enemy. They have a population of 24 million people. 200,000 are signed up with the military? In a country where they are starving by the truckloads, and could join the military and feed their families, yet only 200,000 of them have done so? And of those, half quit when they get their first paycheck. And our troops are fighting and dying for what? Remind me again.

I can think of many reasons why there would be 200,000 in the army, assuming that that's the case to begin with. It's dangerous simply to be in the army, even if one doesn't go into combat. There's a limit to how many men can be trained, in order to basically create an army from scratch. Perhaps men are needed in the police and the national guard more than in the army? But first things first--where do your numbers come from?

you really need to understand that not all civilians are insurgents and not all insurgents are civilians. first off there was no al qaeda in iraq before the u.s. invasion. secondly when your family dies and you have no where to go, your basically going to band up with some other of which happened the same and try to take revenge. thats basically the reality there. and the u.s. military is trying to help out but there are some wackos in the military who joined just to make a few bucks and to get away from the laws in the u.s. luckily, there was a reporter to capture what happened there, if he wasnt, we would never be talking. its sad. but you dont want to tell the american public whats really going on there, you want to make it seem all nice and peachy.
