Default US develops jet fuel made from Coal

Quote:
"The United States is essentially the Saudi Arabia of coal," Mr. Holmes said. "It can be mined relatively inexpensively. We really believe that one of the things we can do to help our country's energy needs is to use the abundance of coal reserves."

Default Germans made diesel fuel from coal during WW II

Germans made diesel fuel from coal during WW II out of necessity not economics. Jet fuel is not all that far off from diesel fuel so if the price of raw crude pertoleum is high enough we very well may find economically feasible to transform coal products and coals by-products into various fuels.

Dig it boys !!!!!!!!

You load sixteen tons and what do you get, another day older and deeper in debt !!!!!!!!!!!

Default Another reason...

...I am looking forward to $7 a gallon gasoline, the alternatives are amazing. Also letting the middle east eat their sand when we ween ourselves from their clutches is a great goal to look forward to.

Although, they still produce a great deal of paprika and dates, should we still be worried?

Default .

The interesting thing about hydrocarbons is when they burn, the large molecules breakdown into smaller molecules like propane and methane before reacting with oxygen. Coal can be liquefied if its molecules can be broken down in an economical way.

Jet engines can burn just about any fuel. The only limitation is the fuel must be clean, and its viscosity must be good enough for the jet’s fuel injectors.

Are you serious? Is this your alternative to oil?..

Is anyone of you aware, what the total CO2 emissions from the liquified coal are? Well - I don't know either , but I have heard they are massive.. I know for certain, that the oil stone liquification emits overall like 5 times more CO2 compared to traditional oil.. I expect that the carbonemission ration for the liquified coal is in the same magnitude ~ a factor between 3 and 8..
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coal#Liquefaction

What ever the case, the coal liquification is not the solution for the future.. It cannot be, that when we run out of one fossil fuel, we replace it with an incredibly worse and more wasteful one..

Oh well. Even so, it's a good back-up and a good thing to get us through till the next breakthrough.

It is one. I assume you DO know there is more than one.

Quote:

It isnt that we dont know, it's just that we dont care.

I am willing to make the tradeoff for more independence on energy if the drawback is stuff thats bad for the environment.

Lets find out.

It doesnt have to be. Every little bit helps.

We'll figure that out later.
