Default Who's a racist?

I am.

Quote:
As part of the ongoing debate on immigration reform, the Senate on Thursday voted on two amendments to make English the "national language," as well as set a "common and unifying language." The first definition was pushed by Sen. James Inhofe, R-Okla., the second by Sen. Ken Salazar, D-Colo.

Quote:
"I really believe this amendment is racist. I think it's directed basically to people who speak Spanish."----Minority Leader Harry Reid Senator-D Nevada
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,196152,00.html

I'm a racist because I have the unreasonable expectation that people before being granted citizenship should be required to be able to speak and undertsand English?..or that English is this countries national language.

....Or am I racist because someones race baiting and trying to pander to the hispanic vote that the Democrats have lost?

Either way to say its racist is simply nonsense. I doubt many(if any) nations on this planet allow you to become Citizens of their nation without being able to speak and understand their nations language.

Quote:
There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism...The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities. ---------Theodore Roosevelt 1915

Quote:
"In the first place we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the man's becoming in very fact an American, and nothing but an American...

There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag, and this excludes the red flag, which symbolizes all wars against liberty and civilization, just as much as it excludes any foreign flag of a nation to which we are hostile...We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language...and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."--Theodore Roosevelt, 1919

Default Im not...

Im not a racist, and Im not Teddy Roosevelt....

If people want to think or live or dream in some other language than English, in the great melting pot that is the modern world (which took its great impetus from the shining example given by the great melting pot society of the former US), then so be it. We are broader and deeper and richer for the cultural complexity that goes into the mix. This has been the great lesson of America; that one can go to a hub-corner in Chicago and Latvian is spoken in the store, in the Church, on the street.

People seem to be getting vexed by a perceived Mexican-Latin invasion - do they not know that they are reacting from a position of supposed cultural-uniformity that never existed, and was never 'us' in the first place?

They would dispense with that which made us particular, the very thing that made us different, the thing from which our 'strength' derives. The lesson we taught the world (and the world has paid attention) we are to unlearn now, ourselves?

Sing the national anthem in Spanish, in whatever language....sing away! Let those who are frightened be frighted; they will be that way anyway....

Default .

Theres something like 500 languages spoken on this planet god knows how many if you throw in the dead ones.
You going to accomodate them all Noesti or figure people a should speak and live in a society sharing a common language?

If your going to become an American then become an American that does not require you to forget or do away with your cultural heritage but it does require you to being an American.

The African-American..Italian-American..German-American..Polish-American..Norwegian-American..Chinese-American..Vitnamese-American..Japanese-American..IOW the Hypenated American..is wrong. Its should not be you either are an American or you are not.
Our use of such descriptions in effect questions the persons Americanism..Is he/she really an American? or just a Pole who became one?
We cast doubt upon the persons allegiance and they cast doubt on it by referring to themselves as such.
As Roosevelt said it creates a "tangle of squabbling nationalities" and is the "The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin"

.....and why are you delving into the Harry Reid dung heap of ""OH let the firghtened be frightened it all about the Brown people!""..It simply makes comon sense....... and since people have become so (*)(*)(*)(*) stubborn in todays world its now required to make it official.
In the past people coming here who wanted to stay would expect themselves to learn English..thats no longer the case..and therefore a national language must be defined..and that language is obviously English.

But anyway.....politically..

According to Harry "the dipstick" Reid about 80+% (on average in most polls) Americans are racists because they favor English being the official language. Smooth move Exlax

Immigration is looking likely to be The National Issue in the elections this year. Thats very bad news for Democrats who do not have much to gain with it and a ton to lose if they pull stuff like what Reid did.

I agree. The party of fascism will try to divert the public's attention from the Iraqi fiasco, the Katrina collapse and their Republican legal swamp. But don't count out homophobia and flag burning as kindling for the fires of mass distraction.
As Karl Rove might say... Where there's hate... there's hope!"

Hate on the left is a wonderful thing.

30 million illegals in this country already, bankrupting hospitals, social services and exploding crime while their leaders in La Rasa talk about killing all the "gringos" and people are still making posts about how the U.S. is a "melting pot". Well the melting pot in boiling over and anyone with any brains knows it's time to turn the heat down before it burns down the whole house.

IOW apotropoxy your scared.
All the issues you mention barely get you guys any traction and pretty much nobody agrees with your solutions..now your faced with immigration an issue with which both the Far Left(you) and the Democrats have no real solutions for and when they do stand almost opposite pretty much to the entire populatons views.

You can fight it..and lose.

You can offer your solutions--and lose

You can do nothing --and lose

All and all this is an issue both you and the Democrats are going to be working hard to get off the table asap.

Karl Rove organized the boycott, the marches, the Mexican flag waving and got all those morons to say and do just the right things to make us mad. He truly is a genius.
