Default shorthand

'American' is simply a kind of shorthand term which seems to have gained a universal usage and acceptance. I have never heard of anyone from any other country being bothered by it, or suggesting that it had some sort of supremacist origin or connotation.

For what its worth - in the past, Irish people most often referred to Americans as 'Yankees'; this affectionate usage has been retained, primarily in rural areas. Most people here refer to people from the United States as 'Americans', or, alternately, disparagingly as 'Yanks'...

But these are the terms used...and I must add that most Irish people, like most people (I imagine), have a great fondness for (most) Americans!

So, forgive them getting their terms a wee bit skewed...

America refers to basically all of the new world...IE USA, Canada, and Mexico. America isn't a country so it shouldn't be refered to as one.
"America" is an abreviation for "United States of America". When speaking about a nation, America = the US. There are no other nations with America in their name. So when speaking about nationality, Americans obviously = The US.

If you want to get technical, there is no America besides the US. If you mean Continents, There is NORTH America and SOUTH America. So Calling Canada or Canadians "American" would be incorrect, since they are NORTH American. As opposed to SOUTH or CENTRAL American.

Default modern day use

America is a shortened form of the USA. America is commonly used in England and Ireland. And when they say "I am going to America" on holiday they are not referring to Canada, Mexico et al. They are referring to the US. America and the US are interchangeable, the America and Canada or Mexico are not. But leave it to some left wing extremists to ban use of the word in schools.

Sorry, but I've lived overseas and have repeatedly visited nine other countries in all. Try a few weeks in the Philippines, for an idea of what Tijuana would look like if it just let itself go.

Americans do not apologize for our country being the world leader. This is not hubris, false modesty, or misplaced nationalism. This is reality.

Make that true Americans don't apologize. Leftists never stop.
