Default Mich. educrat thinks "America" and "American" ethnocentric

Detroit News columnist Frank Beckmann's column offers this chilling reminder why leftist trash must never be allowed to educate our young....

Quote:
Karen Todorov of the Michigan Department of Education tells educators at a meeting and in a follow-up e-mail that teachers should not use the words "America" and "American" when discussing the United States.

Baffling thoughts: Todorov told me Michigan school children should be taught to avoid the "ethnocentric" terms because they risk offending people in North, South, and Central America who may also refer to themselves as "Americans."

If it doesn't offend us that others proudly seek affiliation with our great country, why should they have any concern about what we call ourselves?

Thankfully, Michigan schools Superintendent Michael Flanagan promises he would never approve such ill-conceived political correctness.

"We're not a bunch of radical, liberal wackos around here," Flanagan told me.
===

Gee, wouldn't want all those kids going through American schools to ever stop and think about things like civics or government. (Thank God our schools went to "social studies" instead of "civics"! Now these pukes can recite Maya Angelouy or revere lithographs of (*)(*)(*)(*) Christ artwork, but don't you dare say "America," or else some one might some day be offended by our language.)

Better hush up now about who pays the bills in education --- and never mention whose society fails when it allows bone-brained treason artists like Karen Todorov to have even one scintilla of authority.

America refers to basically all of the new world...IE USA, Canada, and Mexico. America isn't a country so it shouldn't be refered to as one.

You never cease to amaze me.

You respond to cries of ethnocentrcism with an exceptionally ethnocentrist response. So I guess that the rest of North America and all of South/Central America are just liberal lies.

Stunning.

America is the United States of America. America is part of North America, that's also true. But this part rises above the norm.....

What's stunning is you can lob a word like "ethnocentrism," regarding the one country with the most immigrants from the most lands. You probably meant "nationalistic." Conservatives see nothing wrong with nationalism. The hard-core scummunist left in our country immediately sees differently. In America, if you're a leftist, then you must apologize repeatedly to anyone who'll still listen.

As for "the rest of North America and all of South America," look what corruption and socialist governments get for those peasants so blind to have allowed it.

The entire Planet refers to people from the US as Americans.
People in the US call themselves Americans.
USA is synonymous with America.
The end.

Default Good grief

The United States adopted the term "American" and "Americans" at its founding. True, the "Americas" refer to all the new world. America is an ambiguous term to those who aren't citizens of the United States. They call us North Americans or United Staters (in their own language, of course).

Well, we also call our running game of punt pass and kick "football" even the rest world calls a different sport by that name. It is a shame we have coopted names for ourselves, but it was all done in another time and era.

The educrat is technically correct, but what we call ourselves should be defined by us, not by others (even if they disagree, even if they may be right.)

Mack is trying to bring light, not heat, to the debate, so don't jump on him!

What exactly do differing economic theories have to do with the current debate?

What exactly does "ethnocentric" have to do with anything, in a country with a population as variegated as ours?

When one says American...one thinks of the American culture. The term ethnocentric is rather complicated and doesn't necesarilly have an ethnic conotation as much as it does a cultural conotation. The word ethnocentric in the US is generally used to describe whites or Europeans in the US.

Anyways, if you prefer the term nationalistic then go ahead and substitutate that in. Now you can try and explain what economic theory has to do with the subject of this thread.
