Uh, Dude......we don't have a draft. Haven't had since the 70's.
So how are you going to be "sent" anywhere.....unless you voluntarily sign up????

Which one?
J/K.... it seems to me, that Somalia is a nasty piece of unfinished business. If "I" were in charge (which I'm not), I'd make it my business to see that we put some credible intelligence assets on the ground over there. (I realize that's a tall order, but vee have vayz....). After all, the first order of business is alwasy to gain some level of understanding of what (and how) your enemy is thinking. Whether the Islamic government is really going to be our "enemy", remains to be seen, but either way, it strikes me that one State Department analyst and two million bucks isn't quite enough. And, along those lines, I'd also make it my business to take a few satellite photos in the next few weeks and months, just to keep tabs on requipment movements (if any), and that kind of thing. Thirdly, I'd be watching their communications like a hawk. I mean, these people are known to be relatively closely tied in with Al Qaeda, at several important levels. My initial suspicion would be, that we could learn a lot by watching their communications, and we're fully capable of doing that. That would be worth at least one offshore "fishing vessel" (you know, the kind with those wierd-looking radars that are a little too big for mapping schools of fish). That would be enough for starters - I wouldn't go beyond that unless there was some specific reason to. I'm positing that such "intelligence gathering" would be enough to become aware of any major arms shipments, or transactions involving unusual chemicals, that kind of thing. Depending on what we find, I "might" be willing to take it a step further by introducing a few "contractors" into the equation - with plausible deniability and with the advance understanding that they're on their own if the poop hits the fan. No uniformed personnel though, that would be folly. And finally, I'd definitely be building up the analytical capability here at home, using "friends of friends" for diplomatic and analytic purposes, that kind of thing. I'm not sure George Bush is doing any of that. We haven't heard a peep from him on this situation. Which is kinda unusual - usually you hear at least "something" out of the State Department on issues like this. |
