Figures. I mention "Somalia" and your mind goes to "war".

DUH2, I'm starting to get the impression that you've been totally brainwashed by these Bush people.

Who are we fighting again? Oh yeah.... And what's the threat, exactly? Oh, okay.

Mixed up world we're in, isn't it? We're at the negotiating table with the guys with the nukes, and we're in trying to make mincemeat out of the swarm of gnats over in Iraq. Strange, very strange. Go figure.

I'm getting very very cynical in my old age. This is not good. This tells me I've been too deeply immersed in this stuff for way too long.

You know, it occurs to me that this administration came to the table with what they claimed was "absolutely reliable evidence", and on that basis they got us into a terrifically expensive war.

And now they're coming to us again, with "absolutely reliable evidence" this time, and they want me to believe them again?

Hello?......

Did you know the CBO just came out with their new estimates? They're putting the total cost of Iraq at 1.7 trillion dollars. Based on the latest DOD estimate of "approximately ten thousand" active insurgents, that would equate with 170 million dollars per insurgent.

Are you "getting it" yet? Hmm?

Oh, hello Mr. Citizen. How can we fleece thee? Let us count the ways....

Oh and, by the way, we're going to fleece your kids too - but don't worry about it, 'cause we'll give you a "tax break" so you won't notice.

You know what they say.... turn up the temperature slowly enough, and the frog will never jump out.....

Gee: you should go to work for the Democrat party as a spokeman. That's the BIGGEST NON ANSWER I've ever seen!

When are you going to answer Duh's question. After all.....YOU brought it up.

Default well, here's a couple of thoughts

Which one?

J/K.... it seems to me, that Somalia is a nasty piece of unfinished business.

If "I" were in charge (which I'm not), I'd make it my business to see that we put some credible intelligence assets on the ground over there. (I realize that's a tall order, but vee have vayz....).

After all, the first order of business is alwasy to gain some level of understanding of what (and how) your enemy is thinking.

Whether the Islamic government is really going to be our "enemy", remains to be seen, but either way, it strikes me that one State Department analyst and two million bucks isn't quite enough.

And, along those lines, I'd also make it my business to take a few satellite photos in the next few weeks and months, just to keep tabs on requipment movements (if any), and that kind of thing.

Thirdly, I'd be watching their communications like a hawk. I mean, these people are known to be relatively closely tied in with Al Qaeda, at several important levels. My initial suspicion would be, that we could learn a lot by watching their communications, and we're fully capable of doing that. That would be worth at least one offshore "fishing vessel" (you know, the kind with those wierd-looking radars that are a little too big for mapping schools of fish).

That would be enough for starters - I wouldn't go beyond that unless there was some specific reason to. I'm positing that such "intelligence gathering" would be enough to become aware of any major arms shipments, or transactions involving unusual chemicals, that kind of thing.

Depending on what we find, I "might" be willing to take it a step further by introducing a few "contractors" into the equation - with plausible deniability and with the advance understanding that they're on their own if the poop hits the fan. No uniformed personnel though, that would be folly.

And finally, I'd definitely be building up the analytical capability here at home, using "friends of friends" for diplomatic and analytic purposes, that kind of thing.

I'm not sure George Bush is doing any of that. We haven't heard a peep from him on this situation. Which is kinda unusual - usually you hear at least "something" out of the State Department on issues like this.
