The company that distributes Coulter's column has asked for details of the plagiarism claims:

Language adapts Barney..new words are accepted and added all the time.
We *ain't* set in our ways. Quote:
We shall see in the end whom will be right..IMO irregardless is a word and will be defined as such. Irregardless I like the "word" irregardless. So I'll use it. ////////// Quote:

Actually, I don't disagree with Coulter's assessment. My only point of dispute would be: when was the Post *ever* a respectable daily? Somewhere I've got a coffee mug with the classic Post headline of all time: "Headless body in topless bar." They were tabloid before tabloid was cool.

"Irregardless" is not proper because it is wholly redundant with the word, "regardless." They both mean the same thing! There is no reason to put the prefix, "ir" in front of regardless!
Use the word "irregardless" and you will look and sound like a dummy. The choice is yours. (*)(*)(*)(*), why do schools no longer teach basic grammar?

I never suggested they did. There is much in our English language that is illogical. Why isn't "phonetic" spelled like it sounds? Nevertheless, there is proper grammar, and there is improper grammar, and "irregardless" is most improper.

Autumn and fall also mean the same thing, and both words are perfectly fine. Smell and fragrance also mean the same thing. But the beauty of our language is autumn and fragrance are much more stimulating words than fall and smell.
