Israel has arrested and detained 64 Palestinian lawmakers and ministers from the ruling Hamas party, including the government’s Foreign Minister and eight other cabinet members. Hamas called the arrests an "open war against the Palestinian government and people," and vowed retaliation.

Israel made the arrests as it continues its military operation to recover a captured Israeli soldier. Nearly half of the Gaza Strip remains without power following Israeli air strikes that knocked out a main power station.

Israeli Tanks & Gunships Invade Gaza
Israeli tanks and helicopter gunships have invaded the Gaza Strip for the first time since withdrawing ten months ago. Israel says it’s launched the raid to recover captured soldier Gilad Shalit. Shalit was seized in a Palestinian operation on Sunday. The raid began after Israel rejected Shalit’s captors demand for the release of all Palestinian females and Palestinians below the age of eighteen in Israeli prisons. Israel opened the attack with a series of air strikes on three bridges and Gaza’s main power station. The attack left the power station in flames and knocked out electricity in most of Gaza City. Palestinian militants have reportedly taken up defensive positions around Gaza – setting the stage for a potential firefight with the invading soldiers.

Yes, that's right. Not only is Israel holding government officials, women, and children in prison, they regularly attack non-military targets like bridges and power stations just as
they shelled a beach a couple weeks ago on June 12, 2006--and that's nothing new. In fact, Israel shells
office buildings, police roadblocks,
fishing boats, piers,
apartment buildings, and hospitals--and it's never condemned by US officials.
In fact, the US government defies large majorities to support Israel.
70.4% of Americans also favor a neutral US role. Instead, our government is fueling anti-US sentiment around the world through massive diplomatic, economic, and military aid to Israel.

Since 1976, Israel has been the largest annual recipient of U.S. aid and is the largest recipient of cumulative U.S. assistance since World War II. From 1949 through 1965, U.S. aid to Israel averaged about $63 million per year, over 95% of which was economic development assistance and food aid. A modest military loan program began in 1959. From 1966 through 1970, average aid per year increased to about $102 million, but military loans increased to about 47% of the total. From 1971 to the present, U.S. aid to Israel has averaged over $2 billion per year, two-thirds of which has been military assistance.95

For fiscal year 2003, the United States provided $2.1 billion in military grants, $600 million in economic grants, and $60 million in refugee assistance to Israel. And as part of the Iraq war budget supplement, another $1 billion in military grants and $9 billion in loan guarantees to Israel were approved.96

The issue is not whether the United States should be pro-Israeli or pro-Palestinian. Rather, U.S. policymakers need to understand that unbalanced U.S. involvement in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict creates strong anti-American sentiment in the Arab and Muslim world.

Not only is the U$ government indirectly responsible for the terrorism against Palestine, they're creating "strong anti-American sentiment in the Arab and Muslim world"--and they're doing so by dismissing democratic notions such as
the will of the people.
