I agree with everything you say here except for the death penalty. The death penalty works wonders:
1. The punishment fits the crime. A murderer deserves to die.
2. Even more importantly, this ensures less crime in out society. People are more scared to do the crime.
1. I don't believe in revenge. I believe in teaching lessons, but I fail to see how the death penalty does that.
2. Even if the death penalty is a deterrent, the end does not justify the means.
3. Even with these basic views, I still support giving that kid 20+ years.

Default revenge?

Sending people to prison purely for revenge makes no sense. I do not know the circumstances in other countries, but don't think it can be much different, here prisons tend to be 'Crime Uniersities' we send in people for asault, and they come out murderers.

Punishment and rehabilitation should truly walk hand in hand

I like how he has to remove the racist tatoos, that's gotta hurt! In more ways than one! Hopefully it works.
The problem with VIPs in our system is that they will usually get a country-club prison if it's a federal rap, and little to no time if it's a state prosecution. It isn't right but that's how it works. The states don't coddle white-collar or VIP crooks any more than they do a serial killer.

"Harry? Charlie. Look, big guy, about that appellate seat you were looking at. Good news, if you don't get dragged down on appeals by that rich-boy-skinhead case. Plead him out and call me back." (*click*)

...Or something like that.

Putting a skinhead in with Aryan Nations types in the cellblock is NOT going to do anything but reinforce his idiocy.

And your point cannot be stressed enough, that he will be surrounded by those who know his thought process. That part probably won't take hold for him. He'll say what the officials want to hear but won't believe a syllable. If he was bad enough to be a VIP's relative but still be charged, he was in too deep for rehab to faze him.

It's still nice, imagining how he'll squirm. The brothers save their very best for guys as bad as him.

I hate letting people like that go. I enjoy and even savor the thought at what pain this fool must endure until those tats are gone. I had one removed surgically and I know. (A girl's name.) If that surgery gets infected, you need more surgery---quick. He's got plenty of time to sit there hurting, if the probation crowd disallows use of painkillers. I've seen that happen (though the lawyers scream bloody murder.)

Java, he did get 5 years probation as well.
Wait till he finds out he can't bring the urine sample with him, to the probation officer meeting. Tee hee.

Yay for PC re-education camp! The only camp worth goin' to.

They should have just jailed him. The state doesn't have the rightful authority to forcibly remove someone's tattoos nor should any form of re-education camp ever be thought of as an acceptable form of punishment.

People can be racist if they wish, it's a free country. You can't force someone to believe or feel a certain way because you don't like what they say. Of course, these people can not act out and infringe upon the rights of others. Once they do, they are punished for their crime with jail time.

1. All punishment is revenge.
2. Why does killing somebody not justify getting killed? Its only fair.
3. On this guy, I'll agree with you.

he agreed to it because he it too much of a coward to go to jail. He was free to say no thanks I prefer jail, but he didn't. HE agreed to the tats removal and sensitivity training. His choice.

Quiller, I agree...if you are a skinhead, blood/crip or Mexican Mafia then your jail stay has a much higher possibility of being a reasonable experience. Not so for the normal people unfortunately.

You don't say? Here's a choice...jail time or slap on the wrist with stupid PC BS thrown in...what do you want? Derrrr.

The punishment is based on him being a racist...but being a racist isn't against the law. What he did that was wrong was the assault, and for that he should be punished. That includes jail time. This stupid PC re-education camp crap will do nothing to solve the problem or offer up proper punishment for a crime. As such, it shouldn't be viewed as a proper form of punishment. In no instance should the government be given the authority to use a form of re-education camp as a form of punishment. People are going to think and feel as they like, and that's fine. They can not be punished for that. They can only be punished if they take actions which infringe upon the rights of others. The choice between going to jail or PC re-education camp shouldn't be offered by the courts as the government should not be enabled to offer re-education camps as forms of punishment.

1. I support punitive measures only if they serve to teach a lesson, as in "poetic justice". Setting aside supernatural theories, the death penalty does not do this.
2. I was referring to the supposed deterrent effect of the death penalty in preventing other murders.

In the entirely plausible town of Anywhere, U.S.A., let us suppose a woman mayor named Sally Jones and an outraged U.S. citizen named Moron, who chooses to have an obscene tattoo put on his forehead which names Jones by name. The court would order the tattoo removed. It would be upheld.

If the tat were, say, a Crips identifier, that's a right-to-assembly issue and I would support retaining it, not mandated-removal. But the difference here is Jones is a real person [in this case figurately of course], as are the victims of racist tattoos---not so figuratively.

He was brought down by court order, and among his peers may even rise to mini-martyr. But the pain and irritation of having to follow those orders, and rehabilitative discomfort, are reasons enough to keep doing it.
