Default Michigan Student Wearing 9-11 Shirts Suspended

Yes, a student at a high school, wearing a "Remember 9-11" t-shirt was suspended for three days from school. Now, what was that topic a week or so back, about a student wearing some "death to Bush" or something like that t-shirt at school? I opined had he been wearing a John 3.16 t-shirt, the judge wouldn't have ruled in his favor. Let's see what takes place when a student is suspended for wearing a "Remember 9-11" t-shirt.

Honestly, most school officials have cow farts for brains. This is off the charts insane.

Following complaints from a local atheist, a post office in California removed a poster carrying the words "God Bless America" from public view so it wouldn't violate the separation of church and state, reports the Santa Maria Times.

The phrase on the poster in the Lompoc post office, which also pictured an American flag, so offended local resident Matt Hughes that he demanded it be removed.

"They posted a religious expression, in this case, a prayer, and it's not the business of our government to be promoting religion," Hughes said. "That's the business of our churches."

The postmaster to whom he complained moved the poster to a back room out of public view. It had been hanging on a wall above the customer service counter since shortly after 9/11/01.

Unfortunately, because the relationship between schools and students is one of in loco parentis, the students seem to have only those rights the school chooses to give them.

The dress code bans shirts with writing or pictures. This guy should get an exception because you happen to like his message?

Might the school have been more flexible about the anniversary? Yes. But it's not like they're discriminating against patriotism.

Default Cow farts

No one said they discriminated. Their policy is simply dumb. The same school also suspended students for (gasp!) wearing t-shirts with the First Amendment printed on them.

Cow farts for brains.

So you oppose dress codes that ban writing and pictures?

I don't have a link but I heard that the ACLU finds this schools policy unconstitutional. Because it allows anything that promotes the school but nothing else.

Shrug..they should have a more sensible school dress code...and administrators with more common sense.

Depends on the school. Some schools it's necessary to clamp down on gangs.

In some schools it also helps clamp down on non-educational distractions, or keep kids from wasting money on expensive clothes.

I've got two daughters. I'd consider sending them to a school with a dress code simply for the money I'd save on their wardrobe.

Default There are two options

There are two options--school uniforms or no school uniforms. In our district (one with high gang activity), we have school uniforms. This is basically wearing polo style shirts, with khaki or dark blue slacks or shirts. That's it. You can't make a dress code that endeavors to "play the middle." I suspect this dress code was designed to keep students from wearing gang related clothing. That's dumb. By doing that, you not only ban gang related clothing, but clothing with positive messages.

In short, you either go with school uniforms, or basically no restrictions on clothing expressing a belief.
