Default Wal Mart to sell heavily discounted generic drugs

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/...n2028332.shtml

Quote:
The world's biggest retailer said that it will test the program in Tampa, Fla., that will make 291 generic drugs available — which are used to treat a variety of condition from allergies to high-blood pressure — for only $4 per prescription for up to a 30-day supply. It will also be available to the uninsured.

The program will be launched on Friday at one store in Tampa, Fla., reports CBS News' Alexis Christoforous. It would expand to other stores in Florida next year and beyond that after 2007.

The company said it plans to take the program to as many states as possible next year.

On average, generic drugs cost between $10 and $30 for a 30-day prescription.

291 is a pretty large number. And it sounds like common ailments too, high blood pressure, allergies, etc. So it sounds like they'll address the larger part of the drug taking population.

the timing is always interesting...just as those start slamming companies for various behavior the free market comes along to prove them wrong. My employer is voluntarily reducing CO2 emissions by the Kyoto called for amount, but in a shorter period of time. Just as those call for governmental regulation, the free market takes care of it on its own.

Default a question

Are these drugs on which the patent limitation thingy, the amount of time before generic drugs may legaly be sold, has already lapsed?

generally a patent is good for 20 years, but it usually takes 5-10 years after approval before it goes to market. So most drugs are on the market about 12 yrs on average before generics become available.
