Default Using kids as human shields

This made me laugh:
http://www.firedoglake.com/2006/10/0...-human-shields

Quote:
In the fine tradition of George W. Bush standing under the "Mission Accomplished" sign, or any one of the Katrina backdrops (where no expense was spared to bring power to an area for a photo op, and then just as quickly cut off), we now have the head of the NRCC, Tom Reynolds, using small prop children as set decoration in a press conference devoted to the topic of…yes, predatory online sexual solicitation of minors.
Ironically (but predictably), the kids became something of a problem:

Quote:
Reporter: Congressman, do you mind asking the children to leave the room so we can have a frank discussion of this, because it's an adult topic. It just doesn't seem appropriate to me.

Reynolds: I'll take your questions, but I'm not going to ask any of my supporters to leave.
Why yes, let's discuss a Congressman having sex with teenage boys in the presence of 30 small children. I wonder what sort of family values that'll teach....

Idiot.

I don't get it, raytri. What kinds of questions did the reporters want to ask? "Frank discussion"? They were gonna talk about protecting children, right? Safeguards, laws etc.

Reynolds was one of the people who knew early on that there were concerns about Foley. So I expect the reporters were going to ask him what he knew and when. And that might involve describing Foley's activities, or quoting from some of the more explicit e-mails and the like.

I find this more funny than anything.

Default Oh Raytri how so very funny

This is the depth of this scandal though -- the Republicans just don't get that with every attempted defense, they're sinking deeper and deeper in pedophiliac quicksand.

Anyone who's ever read a book about how to survive death situations, knows that when you're in quicksand, you don't struggle -- you only sink deeper. You relax, try to float on your back and then, if possible, attempt to swim out of it.

Republicans are neck deep and they're still thrashing around.

The way to get out is

(1) Get rid of Hassert (and maybe the other top Republican leadership members who knew about this but passed the buck onto Hassert and now hilariously are blaming Hassert as being the one in charge of the page program and therefore they didn't have to do anything else once they brought it to Hassert's attention).

(2) Stop the idea that somehow this was a setup. It's not a setup if the entire Republican leadership knew about it at least for a year and maybe longer, did nothing but let it fester and now are surprised when a news organization actually does a little investigation and the mess blows up in their face 35 days before the election. The Republican leadership could have quickly done something about this a year ago and actually come up swelling like roses. Instead they smell like something that crawled out of a rural cesspool.

(3) Then quit struggling. Stories like this will die within a week; but only so long as there's not more smut and degradation out there. Lord help the Republicans if one or more pages come forward with tales of sexual molestation.

(4) Republicans desperately need to get back on message. This week was supposed to be a major week of Republican congressional announcements about their achievements. Oh well. Stuff happens. Let this drop, quit defending the pervert, quit using negative politics as a distraction (it only makes it clear what Republicans are doing is only a smoke screen and it makes people think the Republicans are really hiding something) and get back on message or else. They got less than 5 weeks (and this week is pretty much shot).

Nevertheless, the story you posted was hilarious. Reynolds is now in trouble in his seat in New York and I don't think he helped himself at all with this transparent attempt at spin control by "kissing the baby".

Default Serious question:

Do you think it would be too tacky to dress up this Halloween wearing a Mark Foley mask and having a young-looking male manequin sitting on your lap?
