Why do they keep doing this? What is wrong with US society that they produce such cowardly beasts as soldiers.

They are brainwashed by continuous reruns of Ultimate fighting championships and Walker Texas Ranger both of which send a message that diplomacy is worthless and the way to solve your problems is to kick your enemy's face in. Just as Bush is handling things.

This is a great example. A 2001 allgation in Japan. We have 100s of thousands of troops stationed all over the world and you have to dig for a rape allegation from years ago. We have the best troops in the world. Attempting to dig up the rare incidents of misconduct to smear all of our brave men and women is disgusting on your part.

The whole thing is terrible. And these troops do need to be charged.

However, I believe our soldiers have been put in an untenable situation. The war ended in 2003 a few weeks after it started. Since then, it has not been a war but a hostile occupation. And when you have friends dying from roadside bombs, and no way to retaliate, a few people will snap and decide to use the godfather methodology. You kill one of us, I will kill your family, who whatever innocent person seems to be linked to you. While this is just as wrong for a soldier as it is for the mob, it can creep into the dark side of people.

I think it still begs to question several things: First, what is our mission? Second, what is training being given to soldiers to handle the situation in Iraq, rather than the training to be a warrier. Because being a policeman and a warrier are two different things. Third, what can be done to stop these.

Let me add, these are far from isolated. We have had multiple people killed at checkpoints, like the italian journalist. We have had many reports of innocents gunned down, like the Iraqi Ambassidors cousin.

Yes they may "snap" under the pressure - a symptom of poor training and the culture from which they originate..
