Yeah, that's how I feel after I watch 24 -- we need to give the government unlimited power.

If you don't like it, watch Oprah instead.

First of all, let me say that in the past two months I have watched all episodes of the fist five seasons. I hadn't had a chance to watch them on TV because I was in Japan at the time, but my wife and I always were curious about the show because of its probably in the US and Japan, so we recently purchased I first five seasons (then we got our money back, but that's a whole other story). We both love the show-- action packed, great cliffhangers.

It is without a doubt. In this show, it seems the Constitution has no real authority. Someone's civil rights are being trampled on in nearly every episode. Americans are tortured regularly, including teenagers.

It also presents scenarios that almost never accur in reality-- the ticking-time-bomb terrorist scenario-- as if it were happening every year or so. Life rarely works like this. We rarely, if ever, receive information within only seconds, minutes, or even hours to respond. If we are getting our info this late in the game, it's probably too late. Most attacks that are stopped prematurely are down so months in advance, if not years, when there is still plenty of time to follow protocol. 24 creates the image that we are under constant threat of attack, of which there is no evidence to support this idea in reality.

The one thing I do like about the show is how it portrays terrorists. They don't have ridiculous motives such as a hatred for America because our culture is immoral and degrading, and they don't have ridiculous goals such as forcing their religious beliefs on us. They are usually very clear that they are angry about US interventionist foreign policy and want those policies to cease. I think this realistically portrays the terrorist mentality.

If people watch "24" and really think they are seeing something based in reality, it's only further evidence that Americans are some of the dumbest people in Earth.

"Fox News" is all over that show - like product placements.

that said, it's really telling to see neocons say things like, "have you seen 24? There are cells in our country and they can blow up LA!!!"

They have no grip on reality and make believe - just read JP5's post on how much she thinks 24 is a documentary.

I think the real reason neocons hate Barney is not because he's a "purple" dinosaur and, therefore, must be gay, they hate him because they think he's real. I'm actually surprised that they haven't used Braney to prove that men and dinosaurs lived at the same time.

After "Will and Grace" turned me gay, I started watching "All in the Family" reruns that turned me into a bigot. Then I started watching 24 -- Now I'm a paranoid, homophobic, gay man who spends hours jamming toothpicks under his own fingernails in the vain hope that I'll blurt out the location of a secret bioweapons cache.

Unfortunately, while maybe not the dumbest on Earth, there are many non-thinking, gullible folks who could be taken in by some of the subtle or not too subtle propaganda that is injected into the program. The program could also very easily cause neocons to get more embedded in their fears without making an objective evaluation of the subject. Don't get me wrong, I've watched the program, I enjoy it, but I can filter out the neocon BS...you know stuff like belittling a fictitious organization called Global International (aka Amnesty International.) Watch it, neocons are sneaky, much more so than liberals.

Whether or not it is a TV show has no relevence as to whether or not it is propaganda. Perhaps propaganda is too strong a word, but there is definitely a strong pro-neocon bias in the show. You can see it in the way suspects are treated on the show. No one ever talks until after they are tortured. The information they receive through torture is always 100% accurate. Torture is so prevalent and so effective on the show, it portrays an image that it is the only legitimate solution we have to fight terrorism.

Now, like I said, I personally don't care. I like the show, but I'm not dumb enough to buy into its mentality. I've met a number of people who are. If you aren't one of them, good for you.
