I think the congressman is a bit off. There are neighborhoods I would not enter in Detroit... but despite gang violence, there are relatively few things along the order of suicide bombings...

I do find the comparison interesting. I think what is going on in Iraq is similar dynamically to what goes on in our inner cities... but despite gang violence in our inner cities... I've yet to hear of any gangs having organized warfare against the government and police. Gangs exist for profit and comradery when it comes down to it and use violence to increase power and defend themselves. Certainly some of that is occurring in Iraq...
But in Iraq there are also organized groups with political goals, where battling the government and slaughtering others is part of the objective rather than a means to it. That's why there aren't suicide bombers in Detroit.

I believe the good Rep was essentially repeating a Rush talking point, although I could be wrong: the previous iteration I'd heard was that Baghdad is only a little more dangerous than Detroit, a claim that is demonstrably ludicrous.

So if you take the absolute best part of Iraq, say somewhere in the Kurdish North or the peaceful south and compare it to the most dangerous city in the USA, then I guess you can make that comparison and call it true.

But this is just another case of republican distortion and misrepresentation.

I guess the republicans are actually happy that our nations educational system is not better, because they continually make inane arguements and believe people will buy them.
